The highlight of our trip was seeing baby alligators sunbathing on top of their mother. See photo. They were far away from the walking area, but with binoculars we could see them well. There are young alligators near the water's edge along the walking area as well.

Beautiful setting. We walked into a couple of the ponds. It was an easy walk in. Saw lots of turtles and some alligators. Saw an incredible number of small and baby alligators resting on shore of first pond that you can drive to and park at (no walking involved). The large alligators were sunning themselves much further out. Great place to get some really good pictures. We will be back.

We were still around 5 hours from our home near Charlotte when we decided to make a side trip to Harris Neck. It is less than 1/2 hour off 95 and easy to find. There is a drive through the refuge which makes it quite accessible to anyone. We did not want to take the time for the trails, but there are at least 3 ponds that are right along the road. The first one we came to was absolutely amazing. It was totally filled with smaller sized alligators, turtles, and several kinds of ducks, including hood mergansers. It was a beautiful, sunny winter day with temperatures around 70. There were about 6 other people wandering around. I don't think I would love this place as much on a hot, humid day with tons of people; however, I would like to return next winter.

We visited this refuge on a very cold Thursday in January and were virtually the only visitors. There were a few maps available at the entrance and this proved very useful to plan our visit. With it being so cold we did not walk all the trails we had intended but focussed on a couple of short ones with returns to the car in between to get warm again. The organisation of the wildlife drive meant that we could observe birds on some ponds from the comfort of our car and there were plenty of places to park beside the road if we needed to stop. The reserve has six ponds, all had a variety of birds to observe even on such a cold day and the trails were easy walking. The reserve would benefit from an organised information/visitor centre and better restroom facilities.

out to lunch with our friends and then on a tour of the wild life area near by. Absolutely peaceful, quiet, and full of beautiful oaks laden with spanish moss. Wonderful afternoon watching waterfowl and visiting while driving through the reserve...am definitely coming back here with binoculars...a bird lovers paradise for sure.
