Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Located near historic Savannah, this park borders Skidaway narrows, a part of Georgia’s intracoastal waterway. Trails wind through maritime forest and past salt marsh, leading to a boardwalk and observation tower. Visitors can watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets and other wildlife. Inside the park’s interpretive center, birders will find binoculars, reference books and a window where they can look for migrating species such as Painted Buntings. Children will especially enjoy seeing the towering, 20-foot Giant Ground Sloth replica and reptile room. A scenic campground is nestled under live oaks and Spanish moss, while groups can enjoy privacy in their own pioneer campgrounds. Open-air picnic shelters and an enclosed group shelter are popular spots for parties, reunions and other celebrations.

“Another great GA State Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

Our family went at the end of October for the Skidaway Institute's open house (UGAs marine science facility). We had a great time. We tent camped with elementary age children.

The bathrooms were clean. The campground in general was well kept. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our site was level and water/electric worked just fine. There's a Wal-Mart fairly close by, the type with a grocery store.

We hiked the trails (be sure to find the lookout tower), biked the campground, and toured the educational center. We also went to nearby Sandfly BBQ, enjoyed that too. On Sunday, we toured nearby Wormsloe Plantation. So, plenty to do and see from the campground.

We will definitely go back. If you are tent camping I'd wait until much cooler temperatures. It is coastal GA so heat and bugs could make for a bad trip at certain times of the year. At the end of October it was perfect for us.

“Geocaching event at Skidaway Island State Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

Another great weekend at Skidaway Island State Park. Over 500 geocachers "dropped" in for a fun filled weekend. Checked out the campsites and found them very clean and ready to be checked into. The park rangers were on hand to answer any and all questions. It was a great time.

“Beautiful park to explore!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

We visited this park in November. The weather was excellent this time of year in Savannah. The park was many trails to explore. The trails includes areas for viewing the march, the inlet, and forest. The nature center has interesting exhibits related to the land and its habitants. The park staff were very friendly and helpful. The views from the observation decks along the trails were wonderful. Park has several geocaches to find!

Park was small and very "buggy." We were camping and I really do not recommend camping here. However, paths were well marked and bathrooms were clean.

“Great place for bird watching”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

Good trails, which were dry and well signposted.
We went around the birding trails and spotted 22 different varieties,
including 5 woodpeckers , pileated, red-headed, red-breasted, downy, yellow bellied sapsucker, and eastern bluebirds, white eyed vireo, and Carolina wren.
Place had huge car parks and was well organised.

As another review said bring your bug spray.
