“Disappointing Marriot”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2010

The Residence Inn in Savannah was very disappointing. This was supposed to be a weekend break for July 4th. We arrived to find very limited parking and apart from valet the only other option was on-street. On check in we were booked into a 2nd floor room , this would have been fine apart from my wife is currently using a wheelchair and there was no elevator. The lady at the check in desk changed our room to something on the first floor , i wish we had kept the 2nd floor room and struggled. The room we were given smelt badly of smoking ( this is a non smoking hotel) and the room also felt very damp. We left the hotel and arrived back mid evening, the room smelt no better than earlier even though it had been "treated" . I asked to be moved , but unfortunately there were no rooms available. By the morning both of us felt very uncomfortable , even our packed clothes felt damp, it was a relief to leave. On a positive note , the outside area was very nice and well presented , the pool area was also very good , but it did not offset the disappointment of the room , at nearly $200 / night , this is not what i would expect.

Thank you for taking the time to write a reveiw of the Residence Inn by Marriott Savannah Downtown Historic District. I apologize that you did not have a less than perfect stay.

As our hotel is located downtown in the historic district, we have very limited on-site parking. We do offer valet parking as an option with unlimited availability to your vehicle. Cars are parked in one of our off-site secured lots. For those who choose to self park there is limited street parking available.

The hotel does have an elevator. I am sorry this feature was not communicated to you at check-in.

Thank you for addressing your concerns regarding the issues you experienced with the dampness of the room and the smoke odor. While we are a smoke free hotel, I regret that sometimes not all of our guests do not comply with this policy. We make every effort to deodorize rooms after we find one which has been smoked in. We have also asked the engineering department to address the dampness issues you experienced.

It is through comments and feedback such as yours that we are better able to serve our guests . We hope that you will return to our hotel in the future and experience the quality service and accommodations you deserve and expect from Residence Inn hotels!

What a pleasure this hotel is! The rooms are very spacious, modern and well designed. The lobby is welcoming with a very good breakfast and managers reception. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. It was truly one of the best values in a hotel I have ever experienced. My only wish would have been to visit Savannah during a cooler month!

We would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family. The room was spacious and had a sitting area - bedroom combo. There was also a full size kitchen with dishes, silverware, pans, casserole dishes. Kitchen was complete with stainless appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave) However, I didn't use the kitchen much, as I was on vacation! I did microwave the complimentary popcorn in the welcome basket of goodies. The bed was a king and very comfortable. I usually don't sleep well in a hotel - too many noises, but this room seemed to be very sound proof. the curtains when drawn were lined so no light came in from the street lights. Did not hear any noise from the street, even though there was an express way ramp not 2 blocks from us. The bathroom had plenty of room for all our stuff with drawers and cupboards. There was a complimentary breakfast buffet every morning. Scrambled eggs, sausage patties, grits, bisquits and gravy, toast, fresh fruit salad, yogurt and a waffle machine. great way to kick-start your day of playing tourist! weekdays they have a manager's reception with complimentary house wine, draft light beer and a snack. Our first night it was chicken wings and the second night it was taco fixin's (nacho chips, taco meat, cheese lettuce, salsa, jalapeno slices and sour cream) Our room had a good size TV that could be turned towards the sofa in the sitting area or turned towards the bed - very convenient. They had a lovely garden area with comfortable chairs and a very clean outdoor pool. Pool towels were in covered bin.
One of the best locations, as we were only a block from the Savannah Visitor Center. There we could pick up a free bus that went around the city. You could also do one of the Trolly tours ($) from the Savannah Visitor Center.
They did have a well-lit gated parking area ($) but we got lucky and found a parking spot on the street right next to the entrance under a street light. We parked and never moved the car for our whole stay. With all the free bus service we didn't need our car at all.

Stayed for 4 days in May following the previous recommendations and reviews. We were not disappointed as hotel is excellent value for money and the staff could not be more helpful or friendly.
Room spacious with kitchen facilities if needed and safe valet car parking opposite for a reasonable charge. Historic district easily accessible on foot within 10 minutes and loads of great eating and drinking places nearby. Streets seemed perfectly safe to walk around.
We had a wonderful break enjoying the beautiful sights of Savannah and heartily recommend this hotel.

This was my fourth visit to Savannah and first stay at the Residence Inn. Every single member of the staff was friendly and helpful during our stay. We were asked what our preference was for a room at check in and we asked for as quiet as possible which we got in the main building on the street by the "memorial".
We did not use the valet parking as we were able to find a spot on the street. Savannah is a easy city to walk and the hotel is in a great location for the trolley rides which I recommend to Savannah first time visitors to get a sense of the city.
The breakfast buffet was delicious and kudos to the staff for keeping up with the food.

We arrived in Savannah by train at 6 am and took a cab to the hotel. We thought we'd ask them to hold our luggage until the afternoon check-in time, and we would explore Savannah until then. To our surprise, they had our room ready for us, and we checked in then. We checked in April 28 and checked out May 5th. The whole experience was exceptional! THANK YOU to all who work there!!
Our room was great, overlooking the fountain and pool in the courtyard, with full kitchen and supplies. The free breakfast was amazing...grits,scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuts and gravy, potatoes, juices, tea, coffee, fruit and all the usual continental stuff ya get in other places...and it's all y'all can eat! Social hour was great,as well, with free wine and beer and a light dinner.
The location was prime for us, as almost everything we wanted to see and do was within walking distance. The exception was Bonaventure Cemetary (a definate Must See!)
History was a big part of our wanting to visit Savannah. Outside the back door, and across the street, is the memorial recreation of the battle of Savannah. Across the street from that is the Telfair museum, which holds many artifacts from the founding of Savannah in 1733 to the bench that Forrest Gump sat on.
In the 7 days we were there, we have not one complaint abour the service, the "go out of their way" helpfulness of all employees.
This is an extremely clean and well run establishment.

My husband, daughter and I stayed at the Residence Inn on Memorial Day weekend. My daughter had just gotten out of school, so we decided to take a last minute trip to Savannah. We normally stay at Hilton hotels, but since we called last minute, there were no rooms available, so we decided to try Marriott hotels since we recently became one of those point customers with them. My husband called the Marriott's reservation line since we were out shopping when we decided to go and she was very helpful in getting us a room. She even waited patiently while we checked with our kennels to see if there were any openings for the weekend. We arrived in Savannah early afternoon and was fortunate enough to have a room ready for us. The hotel is located next to the visitor's center, and it not exactly close to Riverfront, but like I said, it was a holiday weekend, so we were just lucky to get a room. Outside parking is very limited, so we had to use the valet parking, which is $12.00 a day. Vehicles are parked in one of three lots they use, so you have to call about 5-10 minutes before you need your car so they can get it. The only room available was a studio, which meant no privacy for us since our teenage daughter was with us. My husband was searching online and saw that a one bedroom suite was available for our second night at a cheaper rate than the studio, so he checked into this and was able to change our room. He went ahead and made the reservation and showed it to the woman working at the front desk. She was very rude and said that we couldn't change our room since we had already checked in. I've never heard this before. We had the confirmation with us, showing the same confirmation number since all we did was change rooms, but she was insisting that we couldn't do it and that we could possibly be charged for a second room. We showed her our confirmation, but it had not been updated on her computer yet, so she was basically telling us that it couldn't be done. After that we just walked away. I told my husband there would be different staff in the morning, so he went and talked to someone the next day and they were very friendly. The manager wasn't in until 8:00 a.m., so he went back to make sure that we would be charged the cheaper rate and that there were no problems with us changing our room. Everything was fine. Since we changed rooms, we were expecting to have to take everything out of our room, put it in our car and check back in since a late check out was only 1:00, but to our surprise, our new room was available so we were able to move everything at that time. Our new room was in one of the cottages on the second floor, facing the battleground across the street. With the exception of a wall and door separating the living area and bedroom, the room is exactly the same as the studio, except you don't have a chair in the living area due to the door leading out to the balcony. Breakfast was served daily in the dining area, which is nice when you're on vacation. Our daughter knows the outlet mall is nearby in Bluffton, so saving money on breakfast helped with her shopping spree! Now, I give this hotel only three stars. I took away one star due to the rude employee at the front desk and one star due to the location of the hotel. But other than that, the room was very nice and clean. We'll stay there again.
