“The Girl Scouts love Old Fort Jackson and being inducted into the GA Militia with Sgt Lee!”

All Girl Scouts visiting the Birthplace in Savannah, GA should make a side trip to Old Fort Jackson. The girls loved visiting the fort and being inducted into the GA Militia. Sgt Lee is just awesome with the girls and was not only educational, but loads of fun! The sandwich that OFJ provided was the best sandwich we have in a loooong time- so yummy! Thank you to all of the staff at OFJ for being such a gracious host to the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, Houston, Texas!

“Great experience. Put this on your "To-See" list!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2010

Old Ft. Jackson is a little different from the other historic sites I’ve visited, and I definitely recommend others to visit . There is a canon firing demonstration hosted by one of the Fort's employees. Our host dressed in Confederate garb. His presentation was about the daily life of a confederate soldier. No politics; just the human element. It was a very humanizing portrayal of life during that time period.

The canon firing was neat. It was loud, so be prepared. Everyone enjoyed it.

The weather at the Fort was very hot. There was no breeze, even though we were next to the water. So, if you have a small portable fan, be sure to bring it along!

As an added bonus: the water table around the fort was low and there are many small crabs that live in the ground in what should be a "moat." Everyone that was touring the fort took a few minutes to watch the little crabs scurry to and fro and in and out of their holes in the ground.

Overall, I have been recommending this stop to everyone -whether they are planning a visit to Savannah or not. Also, to help a bit with your planning: Wiley's Championship BBQ is not far away and makes a great lunch or dinner! (Drinks come in to-go cups too—and that helps to beat the heat!!!)

“Bugs Bugs Bugs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2010

While the Fort is a great visit; do not ignore the Bug warnings. I can't for the life of me understand why the Fort does not stock bug spray for tourists to buy. And the visitor's center should clearly warn visitors about them. When the sun goes down, they come out in droves.
Now as to the Fort. The rooms offer insight into the size of the soldiers and their accomodations. It is great to imagine history. The video is well worth listening to (especially as it is cooler inside during the times the sun is out). And the view from the top is just great. The guns are worth a look as they offer insight into what it took to defend the Fort. We arrived by boat and were greate with a gun salute. Wonderful. I caught the guns as they went off. Scared the heck out of me they were so loud. But great image. Everything was great until the bugs came out. Even with spray, they were a nuisance. And so many people did not have spray; it was disasterous for them.

Went with our Girl scout troop and it was just as another reviewer said. The guide went out of his way to inform and entertain. Highly recommend.

“Not the most elaborate, but worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2010

We really enjoyed our visit to Old Ft Jackson and are surprised that it wasn't more crowded. The fort isn't as elaborate as some Civil War battle sites (Pulaski or Ft Sumter), but it's interesting. And the employees at this site go out of their way to educate and recreate some history. The guides within the fort were dressed in period garb and were very down to earth in presenting various demonstrations including a blacksmith on site and firing a cannon. We recommend a visit.
