“Southern hospitality at its finest!”
Reviewed September 28, 2010

The AVIA Savannah has quickly become one of our favorite places to stay! The location doesn't get any better than this as the hotel is just a half-block from City Market and 2 blocks from River Street. When we booked our room, we requested one with a great view and were pleasantly surprised to receive not only that but a free upgrade! Our room (Lux One-Bedroom Suite #221) had a balcony that overlooked Ellis Square, which is a hot spot for singles, young couples and families. During the day, children had fun playing in the fountains and every night, the live music from City Market would waft into our room...the authentic southern ambiance and easy-going atmosphere were wonderful! We also enjoyed being able to walk from the hotel to any area of the Historic District at our own pace and loved being so close to all the best restaurants, shops, galleries, museums and nightlife.

Throughout our stay, the hotel staff were all very welcoming, professional and genuinely willing to help with anything we needed...they truly made our stay effortless! It was also nice to know we'd be returning to an immaculately clean and richly-appointed room every night...the bed was especially comfy, and the eclectic furnishings from local shops and artists made us feel right at home. My husband took advantage of the hotel’s top-notch fitness facilities while my leg muscles appreciated a relaxing soak in our pedestal tub after a long day of sight-seeing and antiquing. The pool is on the small side, but it and the terrace were never crowded (outfitted with private cabanas and a fire pit).

While the in-room refreshments were classically over-priced ($3 for a can of soda, $5 for bottled water, $4 for a handful of pretzels), we still had plenty of space to store our own snacks and breakfast items, which saved us quite a bit of money over our 6-day stay. My only nit-picky complaint: I wish there had been more room for personal drinks and food items in the “eFridge” as they call it. We were only granted one very small shelf…the rest were already filled with pricey sodas and spirits. A word of warning: unless you intend to consume these items, do not remove any of them…doing so will the trigger the sensors in the eFridge and eTray to conveniently charge them to your bill automatically.

Practical details:
*AVIA Breakfast Buffet (more of a feast) = $14.95 per person.
*Parking Options: Valet = $20/night (with in & out privileges), Self = $16/night (fee imposed by the City of Savannah).
*Complimentary Wi-Fi , daily newspaper and nightly turn-down service complete with bottled water and chocolates on your pillow.
*Exceptional in-room amenities: hair dryer, iron, safe for laptops/valuables, large flat-screen tv’s, plantation shutters & black-out curtains, terrycloth robes, lots of “gourmet” toiletries, local guides (of the paper-and-ink variety, of course…no, you won’t enter to find Samantha Brown waiting to whisk you away on a tour of the city!).
*100% Smoke-free & pet-free.

we enjoyed a perfect anniversary getaway at Avia. It is within walking distance to many attractions and within a pedicab ride to midtown restaurants and park. The room was a bit small but had a lovely view of the park and very comfortable bed. Bar was nice for drinks before dinner with many unusual wine selections by the glass.

Avia is clean, classy and centrally located to everything you will want to do in Savannah. The concierges are helpful and the staff is quick to respond. I feel we got an excellent value forwhat we received in return. River and Bay street are just a short walk away and the building is secure. Would def recommend.

Great location, nice staff, nice amenities, great doorman. Bedbugs in couch. Received multiple bites. Upon notifying hotel per email, received no response. Would have liked to have known extermination was complete for next visitor. Stairwells smelled like urine. Was such a nice setting and location--- just need to work out some of the bugs

Dear Valued Guest,

I would like to thank you for staying at the AVIA Hotel during your recent stay in Savannah.
With all of the news coverage lately, many of the hotels throughout the country have been reacting to incidents reported by guests. We wanted to let you know that our staff has been trained to inspect for bedbugs and we are happy to inform you that our thorough inspection of your room did not find any evidence of any kind of insects. In addition, we hired an outside professional pest control company to inspect the room, and they also did not find any evidence of any kind of bed bugs. The AVIA hotel takes pride in consistently delivering exceptional customer service. We have never experienced this situation before and we take all concerns very seriously in order to deliver the highest level of service our customers have become accustomed to at the AVIA Savannah hotel.

Best: Adore the bathroom toiletries. They are delicious smelling. The hotel is new-ish so everything is reliably clean, functioning and cool (from my experience of it). AVIA is in a good central location, spitting distance from City Market and Vinnie Van Go-Go, a delicious pizza joint.

Worst: This is a historic city full of charming bed and breakfast options. I feel guilty that I have stayed here my last two visits instead of going to a more character-filled option. My only excuse is that both times I was going to weddings very near the hotel.

Best tip: Stop by the Savannah visitors center on your way to hotel and buy a parking pass for the length of your stay. This will allow you to park for free many places including on the street in metered spots directly in front of museums/historic homes/restaurants. Savannah is a great walking city, but sometimes it is too hot or your destination too far way. The pass will also allow you to park in the garage located directly underneath the hotel, without having to deal with the valets and the daily parking fee from the garage operators. The elevator from the parking garage takes you straight into the hotel through a side entrance without having to go out on the street.

Secondary tip: On my last visit I asked for a room overlooking the square based on another trip advisor member's advice. I would like to add to that: make sure you get a higher floor if you go for the square view (which really isn't one of the pretty squares at all). The noise from partiers in City Market made it to my room. Fortunately, I was able to sleep, but it might bother some people.

All my life I have wanted to visit Savannah and coming from Australia it was a very long way but well worth it - what a special and beautiful place it is. As a family of four (two kids aged nearly 8) we were looking for luxurious accommodation with suite facilities. We chose Avia based on the positive reviews and enticing website.

We arrived at the hotel and the valet parking area is quite tricky to get to and has no alcove - we were standing on the pavement in the heat of midday trying to lug our suitcases out of the car. One valet was helping another guest but did not even acknowledge us. Eventually, someone came and helped.

We got to the front desk and a family in front of us appeared to be having some sort of problem and the receptionist looked frazzled. There was no friendly greeting - it was almost as if we were imposing of them. I said that we were checking in and then she seemed to forget about us. Meanwhile another staff member asked if they could help and checked us in. We went to our room and then realised that there was no sofa bed as booked (just a queen bed for our family of four!). Back down to the front desk we went and apparently we had been checked into the wrong room. Another guest was beside us with exactly the same problem. The receptionist asked if we had "messed up" the existing room which we found a bit offensive as we had been in it for five minutes. We were transfered to the correct room and there was no apology.

In the new room, the sheets on the sofa bed had not been changed, presumably from a previous guest. Then a fire alarm went off. We went downstairs and there was no communication about whether is was a false alarm (it was). The alarm went off again about half an hour later. We ran a bath for the kids and one of the taps fell apart. By now it was becoming almost comical with all of the problems.

The room itself was comfortable enough but the airconditioning either worked full blast (really noisy and cold) or not at all. There was also noise coming from the entertaining area below that interfered with sleep at night. The swimming pool was also the hottest water temperature we have ever experienced - like really warm bath water. Not quite sure what was going on there as really hot water was coming through the outlets. Tepid water is common in a warm humid climate but this was like a hot bath.

There are so many beautiful hotels in Savannah - I'm sure there are better options out there and for the above reasons, the AVIA was a disappointment for us. We are currently staying in Charleston on the next part of our trip at the French Quarter Inn which is amazing.

Just on another note, highly recommend the Pirates House for dinner, particularly for young families visiting Savannah. Delicious food, lovely people and such a fun atmosphere.

Dear Valued Guest,

I would like to apologize for the inconveniences you encountered during your recent stay. I am very disappointed to hear that you and your family did not have a good experience. This is unacceptable! I had an emergency meeting with all my managers to discuss your comments. The entire management team will be conducting additional training with their staff to ensure this does not happen again. I am deeply sorry that you did not have a good experience. I hope that you will give us another opportunity to show you that this was the exception and not the rule. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience futher and to extend a gesture of goodwill in hopes that you will visit us again in the future.

We stayed at the Avia for 1 night and could not have been more pleased. The staff was friendly and welcoming, including the valets who were prompt and respectful. The room was great, very modern and clean. We had an issue with our a/c not working, but a very polite maintenance person was in our room fixing it within 15 minutes. You are truly treated like a valued guest by each staff member, which cannot be said for many other hotels. Probably one of the best hotel experiences we've ever had, can't say enough great things about the Avia.
