This is a "must see"for those of the Jewish faith. Who would believe a Gothic synagogue built
In 1733 in one of the most beautiful squares in Savannah. Try to go for Saturday services and
Meet the nice folks who welcomed us to their Shabbat luncheon.

Mickve Israel (“Hope of Israel.”) is the third-oldest temple in the U.S. designed by the nationally known New York architect Henry G. Harrison “ and is in the Neo-Gothic-style of architecture. It's beautiful from the outside, but even more so on the inside. The stained glass windows are one of a kind, and the guided tour the temple provides for a $5 donation is really interesting.
The congregation dates back to General James Edward Oglethorpe time (1733) and the founding of Georgia
Mickve Isreal Temple owns and still uses the oldest Torah Scroll in America, great historical pictures and commentary on early Jewish settlers as well as ten presidential letters on display, including the Washington letter, and others from Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, as well as the more recent ones from George Bush and Bill Clinton
Whether you are Jewish or not this is a worthwhile stop in Savannah.

Very pretty synagogue in the heart of the historic district. Interesting to see Jewish folks with thick southern accents (if you're from NYC). Savannah has a very old, thriving Jewish community I believe. People there were very friendly.

We toured Mickve Israel last year and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Congregants were gathered to make food for the upcoming "Shalom Y'all Food Festival" and yet, we were given an unhurried tour that was very interesting. We had two of our children with us and this year as we are visiting Savannah, they asked us to take them back! It is a beautiful place with historical significance.
