“Third Oldest Synagogue”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

So much history in this beautiful Temple. It's the only Gothic synagogue in the U.S. with a letter welcoming the congregation from every President starting with George Washington. It's beautiful sanctuary with pre-Civil war stained glass and a great museum about the earliest Sephardic settlers upstairs. A unique experience!

“okay”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

We stopped there because we are not Jewish and thought we could learn something about the Jewish religion. It took about 1 hour. The others there were Jewish so the guide did not explain too much about the religion. But it was interesting to see the Torah and some of the others artifacts they had.

“a top attraction”
Reviewed April 4, 2012

Would not have thought of going here except for Trip Advisor. We spent an hour touring the sanctuary, the permanant exhibition, and the temporary Girl Scouts exhibition. We were made most welcome. We are not Jews. The synagogue is very much like a traditional English Church, but all is explained by the guides! Not to be missed!

“worth seeing just for the torahs!!!”
Reviewed April 1, 2012

Most travelers will stop and see historic churches. Some of the old synagogues around the world are magnificient. THis one
although built in the late 19th century is definitely worth seeing.

The tour lasts 45 minutes or so and tells the history of the Jews in Savannah. After the explanation of the worship hall you go to the museum which goes back to the founders. The old torahs (the old testament hand written in scroll form) written on deerskin are magnificient. The decendants of the founders still worship here. Also, two of the members are depicted on US postage stamps. Impressive.

Worth a stop.
