“Great fun and you don't have to leave downtown Savannah”
Review of Dolphin Magic

Dolphin Magic
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Our Girl Scout troop had a great time on this tour with our first mate Matt. The girls enjoyed the ride from the Savannah riverfront - a great bonus since we did not have a car on the trip - we were able to walk from our hotel. We saw lots of dolphins and the girls had a great time. Some of the dolphins were so close to the boat! The first mate shared great history and geography facts as we motored out to Tybee Island to see the dolphins. Great value, great day. Don't miss this tour!

This is a really nice relaxing tour. The tour was over a hour long along the Savannah river. When dolphins are sighted the captain slows the boat so you can see them and take pictures. The mate was delightful. He is very knowledgeable and pointed out things along the way giving you a description and history. He was also humorous.
Loved it !

The captain knows where to drive the boat to find dolphin. He maneuvers the boat just right so they swim right up behind it and jump and play. It's great fun.

My review is a composite score. dolphins are a 5 rest of the tour is a one. The big problem is that the dolphins hang out off tybee island and it takes 45 to get there and back. so for a two hour tours an hour and half is somewhat wasted with a half hour of great dolphin watching. The boat itself seems underpowered as it takes full speed ahead to get to the dolphin area. This causes high noise and somewhat bumpy ride even on the smoothest water.
The other big problem is that the so called sound system is not loud enough to overcome the noise of the boat. I was sitting directly in front of the 'first mate' as he was speaking and I still had trouble hearing him. He did seem to be cracking himself up however, so I can only assume what he was saying was very informative. The trip out to the dolphins was underwhelming only because we were travelling at ful speed in a noisy boat so any "attractions" were somewhat shortlived and garbled. However, I will say that once we got into dolphin territory the captain was an expert at manuvering for maximum dolphin viewing. When we went there were loads of dophins. Unsure if it depends on a particular season or time of day (we went in the afternoon in the fall).
I would recommend skipping the 'tour' of the river and just going out to Tybee Island and taking the dolphin tour from there. Just as fast, less bumping, less noise more dolphins.

I am so sorry you didn't enjoy your tour. Dolphin are not always found at Tybee, in fact, we often find dolphin before we even get near Tybee. If we find a large pod of dolphin before Tybee, we will stay with that pod the remainder of the trip. Our sister company runs from Tybee Island. If they are reporting good dolphin sightings, we will go to Tybee. This is a 45 minute trip. The tour lasts two or more hours which gives you 30 minutes or more with the dolphin. Most people are delighted with this and the narration we provide along the way. The boat is capable of reaching speeds up to 25mph; however, we never run at full speed. We would be passing areas that most people find interesting, and you would be missing the natural beauty of the area. The Savannah River is so much more than just industrial areas. Fort Jackson, Elba Island and Savannah's beautiful barrier islands are far from industrial. That being said, Savannah is the fourth largest port in the United States. Industries are located along the waterway near the city but not towards Tybee. That is why we go east rather than west as the Riverboat does. As far as the speaker system, there was a day that our speaker was acting up. We replaced it soon after the trip. As our positive reviews attest, most people find our tour to be the highlight of our trip. We are sorry you did not.

It's a 45 minute high-speed boat ride down the Savannah River to Tybee Island, where, for 30 minutes you may see some dolphins as they break water for two seconds and then 45 minutes back up the river to River Walk. Not worth $27 PP. The river is industrial sites between streaches of woods.

Although we may try, it is difficult to please everyone. Most people find the ride to Tybee to be interesting and beautiful. Seeing Fort Jackson, Elba Island, Fort Pulaski, the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and the Tybee Lighthouse usually pleases everyone. Our route does vary according to dolphin location, so if we encounter a large pod of dolphin, we will usually stay with that pod the remainder of the trip. Since dolphin are wild mammals, their location will vary from day to day. Some days we find dozens of dolphin while other days we may only find a few. We do offer a dolphin guarantee just for this reason. If you are ever unhappy with the dolphin sightings, you can go again for free. Since you did not enjoy the tour from downtown, you could have gone on our Tybee tour at no charge. Nonetheless, we do wish you would have appreciated the tour as most of our reviewers have. We do hope the rest of your stay in Savannah was enjoyable.
