Shops and restaurants were nice, good variety. Hard to find parking. Clean, pet friendly area. Very good historical info.

Jan. 5, 2013: Police called in to deal with a standoff involving a deranged man wielding a knife and threatening to kill passersby. Once the must-see attraction in the historic district, River Street has now become a haven for the homeless looking for handouts and begging for "donations" for singing, playing music, dancing, or selling trinkets out of twisted palm fronds. You can't walk five feet along River Street without being hassled for loose change. The shops that once catered to a wide variety of interests and budgets have lowered to the $5 denominator and few restaurants are worth the price of the view of one of the busiest seaports on the eastern seaboard. This ain't Nantucket or Venice; this is a working port filled with container ships, not sailboats. There have been two murders on River Street in the past 90 days...if you must go, chance it in the mornings before the riffraff take over. But avoid it after dark.

River Street is a MUST on a visit to Savannah. From one point, you can eat at wonderful restaurants (One Eyed Lizzies, The Cotton Exchange), shop in specialty stores (Fannie's Your Aunt, Bob's Your Uncle) and watch the container ships coming and going on the River. Photo ops are endless and subject only to your imagination. Ticket booths hawk everything from Dolphin tours to Ghost tours so there is something for everyone. It's an experience just driving and walking on the cobblestone streets. If you are ever in Savannah, spend at least a few hours on River Street. Be sure to walk upstairs and visit those shops as well. And pay your respects to the statue of Florence Martus "The Waving Girl" of Savannah as you leave.

River Street is very pleasant to mosie around, just don't waste money or time eating there. More tasty treats await up in the Historic district. We used a coupon that was given to us by the trolly company. $5. off a $25 food bill at a popular hamburger joint on the River. Don't fall for the same deal. It wasn't worth the money.
