Yes, there are lots of touristy shops, but it's all part of the fun. There are also good restaurants, candy shops, art galleries, plus more. We saw two huge barges go down the Savannah River. One was from Panama, they were both loaded down with containers. Each had tug boats beside them. Quite a sight to see. If the stairs look a bit too steep for you, there is an elevator by the Hyatt. It goes down to River Street by the visitors center.

River Street itself has beautiful historic buildings and a great view of the Savannah River. That being said, the businesses on River Street run towards the tourist-y and tacky. They include souveneir shops, a whole lot of bars, and some restaurants. If you are visiting Savannah for the history and beauty, I recommend taking a 15 minute walk down River Street just to see it. And then head back to the historic district!

If you are in the Savannah Historic District, you should visit the River Walk. There are lots of nice restaurants and shops. Live music in the evening and of course, a pleasant stroll if you like. Dinner cruises are available departing from the dock there.

All of this is nice but my favorite was the fresh pralines. Beware of the free samples as you come in the door. Once you taste them, you will HAVE to buy some more. Very delicious!!

With the exception of a couple of art galleries, like Gallery 209, this area is restaurants/bars and tourist shops. Shopping is better on and around Broughton.
