Owner description: The Massie Heritage Center should be your first stop in Georgia's first city! Massie provides the best orientation for your visit with a 3D model of Savannah's entire Historic District, including three laser-lit narratives of the city's history projected onto the model. Massie's six exhibit rooms inside the historic 1856 Greek Revival school house offers visitors the unique opportunity to learn about Savannah's many architectural styles, the earliest inhabitants of the Georgia coast, the historic preservation movement in the city, and what school was like in the 1800s inside our authentic heritage classroom. We are located on beautiful Calhoun Square, Savannah's only architecturally original square, at the corner of Abercorn and Gordon streets. We look forward to seeing you!

I love the new exhibits at Massie Heritage Center! They recently underwent $1 million in historic building restoration and new exhibit upgrades. Visitors can view the only 3-D model of Savannah's downtown landmark historic district before setting out on foot. You can walk through replicas of some of the world's most amazing architectural structures like the Parthenon and Notre Dame and see how these influenced Savannah's own historic district. Witness the preservation movement with amazing artifacts and you can go back in time in the authentic replica of an 1800's classroom. We all enjoyed writing with a quill pen and on a slate board! Indoors, air conditioned and bathrooms located in a beautiful garden. Lot's of hand's on activities for kids too!

Although the mid-19th century school is a memorial to early schools, it is really centered around Savannah's architectural history. The recent renovation has made it a super addition to the historic houses and sites in Savannah. Owned by the School Board, it does not have an advertising budget and is not widely publicized in the usual tourism sites. Don't let this fool you, it is worth visiting. Only open to the public on Fri/Sat/Sun, so plan ahead. $7 adult, $5 seniors.

Massie contains a huge scale model of Savannah that is vey detailed and has several "electric map" options to learn about the building of Savannah. Exhibits include child-friendly learning about architectural elements (design your own city plan, create a hybrid Doric/Ionic/Corinthian capital, etc) and an era-by-era display of the architectural styles of Savannah with examples of each type. Another display about historic preservation has salvaged accent pieces from demolished buildings.

The upstairs school room was used in the filming of the movie, "Bagger Vance".

I had taken 25 children to visit Savannah, GA. We tour the Massie Intrepretation Center and the Savannah Riverboat Cruise. Both events were interesting and exciting.
