Owner description: Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Excellent exhibits. I loved the lady at the admission desk - such a sweetheart. The building is beautiful.

“High Quality, Accessible Collection”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

No, folks, this isn't the Louvre, but for a small art museum it has found its niche and presents itself well. The pieces in the permanent collection have informative plaques that explain their significance, and are shown in a stunning space, part antique mansion, part purpose-built art space. The two temporary exhibits (Mary Whyte and Preston Russell) were superb--If this is an indicator of Telfair's usual operations, I would return as often as possible!
If you're only looking for the Bird Girl, I'd advise looking at a reproduction that you can find at any gift shop in town. If you want to see a good collection of paintings and furniture that you can cover in a couple of hours, the Telfair is well worth your time. The 3-ticket package of Telfair, Jepson (modern collection) and Owens-Thomas House, which is even more economical with a AAA membership, is an excellent value if you have more than a day to spend in Savannah.

“Great small art museum!”

Nice art museum. Had a beautiful Mary Whyte exhibit while we were there. Love her art. So realistic and touches on real people. Worth a visit if you like art. Also have the statue of the Girl feeding the Birds from the Midnight in the Garden of Evil (sic) movie.

“Wonderful art exhibits”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2012

The current display of Preston Russell's paintings and Mary Whyte's watercolors are incredible.
The fee to enter is very nominal and the museum is just beautiful with several other rooms and sculptures to enjoy. I would consider the Telfair Museum a must see if you are visiting Savannah.

“Loved Telfair”

The current exhibits were beautiful and moving: Preston Russell's paintings and Mary Whyte's watercolors. The Telfair also has an excellent permanent collection.
