Owner description: The city's oldest cemetery, with family plots dating back to the 1700s.

This cemetery is very old and has a ton of history. Not really well documented as to its story but nonetheless well worth an hour or two. I little research on the cemetery and the early history of Savannah will enhance the experience greatly. The family mausoleums, the headstones against the brick wall and the instances of mass burials there during yellow fever epidemics tell tales of the early city and colony.

You could spend several hours here reading the famous and non-so-famous headstones. Be sure to visit the wall of orphan-graves.

The ships are more interesting than I expected and the house is great! Plan to go back and spend more time there.

Found the cemetery while walking the historic district. So awesome. Full of history. Some tomb stones have historical markers telling you more about the persons history and contribution the Savannah or our country. Later that night a tour guide took us on a "spirit tour" which included the cemetery. Fun. Would plan on a couple hours to walk around and explore. You will notice some head stones attached to the wall of the police department. (Next to cemetery) i was told....during the civil war the grounds were used to allow the horses to graze. It was fenced in. They removed some the the stones or the horses kicked them and they were removed. That is what was told not sure how true but great place to visit.

We stumbled across this during our first walk, much different (not as crowded) as other colonial cemeteries, so a very different atmosphere.
