Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“Beautiful!”

I visited Bonaventure Cemetery several years ago and again this trip. The cemetery is beautiful, the graves well maintained, and the history priceless. You will not be sorry if you visit this landmark.

“A Savannah Must See”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

Bonaventure Cemetery's current fame is based in large part on Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and there's definitely atmosphere under the oaks in spades. There is much history also, with family names on the monuments intimately tied to the story of the South. Johnny Mercer's resting place is worth taking the time to find, if only for the extensive list of his hits carved into a bench near his resting place, with "and the angels sing" carved into his stone. Set aside two hours and take your camera. No facilities.

“Worth the drive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

Midnight in the Garden of Good (no evil here). A beautiful cemetery with room to roam. Someone has kindly marked the lanes with direction arrows to graves you might want to visit. We didn't have a map so just drove around in awe.

“A must see walk through history while in savannah!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2014 via mobile

This cemetary is stunning in it's beauty. I couldn't imagine a better place to be laid to rest. Full of rich history, it's nice to wonder about reading the monuments and stones, imagining the lives of those before us. Great photography opportunities as well.
