Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“A must see walk through history while in savannah!”
Reviewed January 22, 2014 via mobile

This cemetary is stunning in it's beauty. I couldn't imagine a better place to be laid to rest. Full of rich history, it's nice to wonder about reading the monuments and stones, imagining the lives of those before us. Great photography opportunities as well.

“Stories Told in a Serene Location”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

I was unprepared for the totally spiritual and serene environment of Bonaventure Cemetery. With the old tall oaks draped in moss, gently blowing in the breeze, this was a wonderful walk through Savannah history. Many of the monuments were works of art that have withstood time. This is definitely a worthwhile stop during your visit to Savannah.

“Peaceful Beauty”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

Give yourself at least 2 hours to wander the grounds. Make sure at least one person in your party can find their way back to the car. The beauty in this cemetery will take you on a long winding trail through seemingly endless history. There are live oaks, Spanish moss, and beautiful monuments all around. But don't go hoping to see the statue from Midnight in the Garden... it has been moved to one of the museums.

“Grace & Glory”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

Peaceful and so beautiful, to say this about a cemetery may be a bit strange but it is true. Bringing glorious nature and historical scenes to mind is so soothing just being there was a pleasure and the historical aspect was great. A must see!
