Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“Oldest, most haunted cemetery in America! Creepy and Beautiful!”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

My sister wanted to go here during our recent family trip to Tybee Island. After learning a little bit about the history of Savannah and the cemetery, we went along. This place is absolutely beautiful! The tree lined roads with the Spanish Moss as well as the ghost stories make this a very peaceful yet eerie place to visit. It was neat to walk around and see the different grave markers, especially Little Gracie. You could literally spend hours walking around this place. I would have loved to visit at night!!

Must see in Savannah. With the live oak and Spanish moss along these mysterious and beautiful statues and graves, it really sets a mystical tone.

Nations oldest Cemetery. Am a history buff. Man at office very helpful. Was able to find the final resting place of Johnny Mercer, Mary Telfair and Claude Aiken. Also good to see the legendary Gracie/ And of course at free the price is right

“A must see”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

How much history packed into a small area. Take a few hours to tour. A lot of famous military burried here as well as Johnny Mercer (composed Moon River, among 100's of other songs) Beautiful old statues. Make sure you stop by the office to get a brochure and map. (leave a couple bucks in the offering box to cover expenses, optional but nice : - ) )

“Highly Interesting”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

This tour was extremely entertaining. Despite that it was a cemetery, we did not want to do a Ghost Tour so we just went during the day but it was extremely interesting due to our entertaining tour guide. She knew so many stories of personnel in the cemetery and was a true Southern Lady. We loved her personality and energy (she was a perfect fit for us)!
