Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

If you want a great location for a horror movie you got it here this really is like a movie set style graveyard. Ok with that out of my system i must say this was one of the most majestic old cemetery with a lot of interesting markers, plants, trees, and sculptures. We were able to drive around most of it, stop get out and walk down areas that we couldn't drive. Trees mixed in with the grave markers were really beautiful. Spanish Moss everywhere. I actually saw people coming out and having picnic out there and wished we did it was just that nice of a place to just sit around and enjoy the sights. We only had a little bit of time to look around but I can see people coming all day and just really enjoy walking around.

This place is gorgeous. You'll see nothing like this in a modern cemetery. You know that some of the tombstones were very expensive in their day. Real tributes to the deceased. We stop here on every trip to Savannah. The location along the river is beautiful and I can see why families would want to be buried here. Every time we go, we find something new. Interesting historic place. Would highly recommend.

Didn't have time to book an official tour but after stopping in at the visitors center and obtaining a map we were off to search and learn on our own. Beautiful grounds with so much history to observe. Sure a story or two would be good but its was quite enjoyable walking around with our own agenda.

There are definitely some awesome statues in this cemetary. when we went it was misting a little and a bit cloudy so it made for some pretty cool pictures.
