Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

This cemetery is just like I expected and more. The monuments are breathtaking, the old oak trees seem to have their own stories to tell and the spanish moss is just the icing on the cake!

Really great place to visit because the history goes back so far. The trees with the Spanish moss are particularly beautiful. It's location is on the way to Tybee Island so it's a good stop on your way.

Amazing monuments...Beautiful trees...Quiet...Grand example of respect for humans...Amazing how many Confederate soldiers survived the war to be buried here. There graves are noted with an Iron Cross.

We decided to take a daytime 2 hour paid tour and it was worthwhile. Although you may enter free, the historical society gives you a map and there are markers to point out famous graves, we wanted to know the history of the former plantation, the stories of the people and the sculptures.
This gave a full picture of the famous, the infamous and Savannahians over the centuries.
Warning - Although we enjoyed it, I would suggest you bring along bug spray. I am a bug magnet and left with over 100 extremely painful fire ant bites on my legs. Even though I stayed clear of the ant mounds as soon as I saw them, I could not avoid the critters.

We drove here late in the afternoon on a warm day, but it was still a little spooky. The cemetery is beautiful and very well cared for.
We didn't walk around all of it and didn't know that there are organised tours, but i don't think that made any difference.
If you have a few hours to spare then it's worth the effort, even if it's just to sit on a bench and gaze over the river.
