Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“One of the most scenic cemeteries in the American South”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

I've been to quite a few of the historic cemeteries in the Old South and Bonventure is by far the favorite. On a bluff above the intercoastal, between the historic district and Thunderbolt, there isn't a better spot in Greater Savannah for the site. Mid to late morning is the best time to show up for taking pictures. Please be mindful of the services that you will encounter at these hours. Bonaventure rivals Charleston, Mobile and New Orleans in terms of the attention paid by the families to their forebears. If you like history or scenes from an earlier time then you'll enjoy Bonaventure. I would have like to include more photos but unfortunately Tripadvisor limits the file size to 20-mb.

“Interesting place. Worth the drive.”
Reviewed October 30, 2012 via mobile

Beautiful historic cementary. A little far outside of town but if you have a car it's an easy drive. If you don't have a car I'm not sure it's worth paying for a tour of the cemetery unless it includes other historic sites.

“Beautiful and Serene.”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We drove to Bonaventure Cemetery mainly to take photos of Grace's grave and statue and the trip was well worth it. The grounds are beautiful and serene and it's a wonderful spot for photos.

It was so interesting; and we just loved it! We went with Savannah Heritage Tours and had Angela as our guide. She was so informative and let us look as much as we wanted to look. We had trouble finding a tour, but I would highly recommend Savannah Heritage Tours.
