Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“take a tour”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

We used a tour company since we were without a car, go in the late afternoon (3pm) and bring your camera, beautiful! I hear the best time is March with the azaleas blooming but September was great too.

The sculptured stones in this cemetery are outstanding. This cemetery is so large you could spend a full day there. A must see!

“Very peaceful...definately worth visiting!”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

My family and I visited Bonaventure Cemetary and found it to be very interesting. We only had a couple of hours to spend, but it could easily turn into a whole day event. They offer free maps at the visitor center and also have tour guides. We would have chosen to do the guided tour if we had more time. We will definately visit again.

Beautiful trees draped in Spanish moss with history reveling itself in headstone markers makes you feel that life is standing still. Enjoy the quiet and serenity of this magical place.

“Cemetery exploring”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

If you are one of those people that find it interesting to wander through old cemeteries, you'll want to check this one out. There are some really old burials from the earliest days of Savannah. The statuary is most interesting and for those not from the southeast, the Spanish moss hanging from the trees combined with the palms gives it a distinctly southern feel.
