Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“Peaceful beyond words”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

We just drove through the cemetery, which was absolutely beautiful. Very interesting to read and see all the headstones. The cemetery is extremely peaceful. I know cemeteries are peaceful but some you can hear all the traffice and background noise. Bonaventure you didn't hear any of those.

“Beautiful historic cemetery that tells the tales of long ago!”
Reviewed August 3, 2011

I am so glad we took the time to visit Bonaventure Cemetery. It is a lovely setting, filled with Spanish moss draped Live Oaks and other trees and bordering the river. It is well shaded which made it comfortable walking around even in the intense heat we had while visiting Savannah. Cemeteries really tell the stories of a particular area and this one is one of the best. Graves go back to the 1850's, many markers tell about the person, where they came from or how they died, and there were so many beautiful markers. Several famous people are buried in the cemetery and there are many distinctive graves. We drove slowly through the entire cemetery, parking in different areas as we went along. It is a very large, sprawling cemetery, I recommend keeping your car nearby as you move along.

“So Beautiful You Almost Forget It's a Cemetary”
Reviewed July 25, 2011

My husband and I recently visited Savannah for the first time. We knew we absolutely had to see Bonaventure. We drove out on our own the first day and drove around for about an hour just looking at the lovely sculptures and markers..its far too big to try and walk the entire grounds. We decided pretty quickly that to get the most out of our experience, it would be better to go with someone who knows the points of interest (besides the obvious ones) so we called a local tour guide who gives daily tours of the cemetary and got so much more out of the history of some of the significant people who are buried here, as well as some of the special "sections" of the grounds. Definitely worth a visit.

“hauntingly beautiful place”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

We visited the cemetery in the early morning, before it was crowded with visitors. What a lovely place! The live oak trees were amazing and the gravestones were not only beautiful but interesting to read. The peaceful atmosphere and lovely surroundings made for an unforgettable morning stroll. The cemetery is definitely worth a visit~if I had to name one place in Savannah that really summed up everything we thought this Southern city would be, I would have to choose Bonaventure. It's sultry, mysterious, beautiful, and unforgettable.

“Very historic and interesting walk”
Reviewed July 15, 2011

We visited the cemetery just before closing. What a wide variety of gravestones. The trees and Spanish moss provide both a scenic backdrop and relief from the sun. This is truly a unique and historic walk. Next time we return, we will give ourselves more time as there is so much to see.
