This is a must see when in Savannah. Our tour driver actually broke the rules in order to stop and let us take a moment to visit the Cathedral. He knew that the Cathedral would be closed for a baptism later that day and he wanted to make sure we all got a chance to see it. I'm so glad he did!

The Cathedral is open sporadically due to services and special events, so check beforehand to see if they will be open. The visit is free but donations to the church are appreciated.

We were not sure if they were really open. Thankfully we didn't let all of the scaffolding keep us from trying to get inside. There are no signs saying they are open. So I recommend you just follow the one orange arrow and go under the wood boards. It is a beautiful church.

Just a magnificient church. It is very ornate inside covered with marble and stained glass. The outside of the church is currently under restoration

On our historic walk of Savannah we enjoyed the beautiful Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. A wonderful docent provided interesting information about the stained glass windows, recent renovations and use of iron pillars to open the space of this gothic style building.

Savannah has many wonderful sites and a stop at the Cathedral is a quiet, cool, and contemplative stop. The architecture is interesting and for those who visit Cathedrals in other cities the similarities provide a connection between trips.
