Owner description: You don't have to be an architect to enjoy the Architectural Tours of Savannah with Jonathan Stalcup. He is author and holds a Master of Architecture degree from SCAD. Jonathan not only knows his stuff design-wise, he makes it really easy for the average tourist to understand how Savannah was born and grew into the beautiful and beautifully singular city it is. He not only stops and points, he brings along visual aids to help you understand how a particular building or square evolved. You won't be bored or even tired- the tour progresses (and walks) through hundreds of years of history at leisurely pace.

My wife and I took Jonathan's 90 minute walking tour this afternoon and were amazed at his depth of knowledge and his obvious love of architecture. The tour showed a timeline from the early 19th century to post modern (late 20th Century) and the many styles of architecture that make up Savannah's rich architectural heritage as well as some of the great architects that have left their mark here. Many thanks for a lovely afternoon.

Larry & Jean

Not enough praise to write here, but Jonathan is really amazing. He does every tour himself, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of Savannah's architecture.

If you quickly tire of the aw-shucks, dumbed-down trolley tour, this is the perfect antidote. It's informative AND entertaining. That expensive SCAD education has really paid off for him, and Jonathan actually makes learning about tabby fun!

What an enjoyable tour we had with Jonathan on his walking tour of Savannah. Proceeding at our small group's pace and viewing the wonderful buildings from under the trees and through the trees is the way Savannah buildings should be seen. Jonathan's explanation of the architectural features of the houses and the stories about the architects and the home owners are fascinating to hear. He answers any questions as if he has never been asked them before. For memories' sake, it's a good idea to purchase Jonathan's book containing the architectural information, along with a wonderful color photograph of each house or building.

Jonathan does a great job of showing you the most interesting buildings and the story behind them with an emphasis on the style of architecture. The tour lasts around 90 minutes and will leave you with a good basic understanding of how Savannah developed and built these beautiful structures. You don't cover the entire city but focus on a few areas and the different styles of architecture.

The only con was sometimes the traffic noise is loud and would delay the tour but that is unavoidable. Sometimes it was a little difficult to hear the narration due to city noise. No big deal though.

I recommend this tour because it is a walking tour and does not contain the tall tales and legends but facts. The tour does not cover the Mercer house as it is farther across town from Washingon sqiare.

Savannah is a true gem of a city, and there's no better way to discover the hidden facets of this urban jewel than a walk with Jonathan. He has done the research, relates the story with wit and wisdom, and is generous with insights into this great historic city. My wife and I found him by a keyword search for "walking tours" and his basic tour was a highlight of our brief visit. We quickly booked him for the followup tour the next day. Our groups for both tours were small (only 4 total including us for the first tour and 3 on the second tour) meaning ample opportunities to ask questions. Even if you don't know much about architecture, Jonathan makes each building a story.
