Owner description: You don't have to be an architect to enjoy the Architectural Tours of Savannah with Jonathan Stalcup. He is author and holds a Master of Architecture degree from SCAD. Jonathan not only knows his stuff design-wise, he makes it really easy for the average tourist to understand how Savannah was born and grew into the beautiful and beautifully singular city it is. He not only stops and points, he brings along visual aids to help you understand how a particular building or square evolved. You won't be bored or even tired- the tour progresses (and walks) through hundreds of years of history at leisurely pace.

Following Jonathan across Savannah is truly an enlightening experience; an opportunity to see the city through the eyes of an informative and good natured expert. Starting from an example of the earliest type of structure and working across the squares to the most modern building in the city; Jonathan keeps his tour group interested and enthralled as he works his way through Savannah's architectural history. You don't have to be an expert to appreciate this tour; Jonathan keeps things on the level of his group's knowledge, always willing to answer questions from the group. It was an extremely hot day in Savannah when we went on the tour, but 90 minutes passed by in a blink of an eye. I have not been on all the tours in the area, but I can say that you will find your time and money well-spent on this one.

Even after living here for over 10 years, Jonathan's tour taught me more about the architecture, history and culture of Savannah than any class I've taken or any other tour.
I'm amazed at how much he knows and how much he loves sharing his knowledge with others.
GO on this tour!

From the start the owner and guide Johnathan returned all our emails and calls when deciding where to go and what to do while in Savannah. Not to many tour industries do that so easily as we have found. We started at some of the older historic homes and continued to some of the newest buildings of the day. Although the tour is 90 minutes, I had hoped it would have continued, because it was so interesting, it seemed so short.
He pointed out many features that even a newbie like myself could understand. Having a limited number on the tour made it very personal. Johnathan was extremely polite and yet comical. Taking us to all the shade spots and closely safe guarding our group while crossing the streets and walking some tricky pathways. You can tell he is well educated in his field. I wish we could have gone in some of the buildings. But, some are private residence and official buildings. A few of the stops are historic homes you can tour on your own. Well worth your money, its a tour were very happy we went on. Oh and Johnathan I will never forget 5 4 and a door.

The "Savannah Getting Around" article in TripAdvisor's "Know Before You Go" section begins: "The best way to see a city as beautiful as Savannah, is by foot." Small group walking tours can be found sporting several themes: historical, architectural, Civil War, "The Book", ghosts., and perhaps others. Architectural Tours of Savannah owner Jonathan Stalcup, a friendly and very knowledgeable guy, takes groups on a journey through the history of Savannah. The tour was very informative, showing a wide variety of architectural styles, and weaving a coherent story of how it all fits together to make Savannah. BTW, Jonathan is the author of Savannah Architectural Tours, a photo-filled Savannah architectural tour in a book.
