“Baltimore's Hidden Gem”
Reviewed July 7, 2009

We stayed at the Inn at the Colonnade to look at Loyola University for my daughter. This hotel was perfect for the occasion!
First off, it is located very close to both Loyola and Johns Hopkins University. The area is nice overall.
The lobby was breathtaking. Not only was is huge, but it was SO fancy! I don't understand why it only got 3 Diamonds AAA!
The staff were all very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Check in was quick and easy. And the Doubletree Cookies are to die for!!!!!!
We booked the "Fun" rate which gave you the room, a large pizza, popcorn, a free movie rental, and the next day FULL breakfast for 4 people! At 169 a night, it was a real bargain!
Another good thing about the Doubletree is that the hotel is surrounded by and connected to Condos. The good thing is that loud and obnoxious tour groups or weddings have to keep it down and be out before 10! This is a real plus!
The room was awesome too! We got the 2 Queen Beds Larger Room. It was huge! The beds were big and comfortable, the bathroom was fancy and large, and there was a sitting area! All wonderful! As far as tech, there was FREE internet (Yay!), and a big flat screen TV with a lot of channels and movies.
The area is nice. There is a Ruby Tuesday around the corner which was a great place for dinner! Beware of the EXTREMELY TIGHT parking quarters in the neighborhood. Not a big deal, though. Parking at the hotel is $24 a day valet (one time fee) and $20 a day self, but the self is far away and you have to pay a fee when you leave every time. Weird!
Breakfast the next day is at Alizee, the onsite restaurant. Not only is the restaurant really nice, the food was GREAT! The omelette guy is amazing! There was eggs, bacon, sausage, taters, toast, danish, pastry, cereal, fruit, etc. Also be sure to try the Choc. Milk. Best I've ever had!
Beware, though. If you are looking to see the Downtown Baltimore (inner harbor, camden yards, malls, etc.) DON'T GO HERE! This hotel is far from those places and not at all convenient. It is perfect for visiting the colleges, like we did. Overall, a great hotel and a great stay in Baltimore. This hotel is truly a hidden gem.

As a one-time resident of Baltimore's Roland Park-Homewood area -- it's my favorite part of the city -- we chose the Doubletree Inn at the Colonnade purely for its location, which is lovely. It's lovely by the way if you're not married to being in the Inner Harbor or in other truly urban Baltimore neighborhoods (like Fell's Point and Inner Harbor East). This hotel is prime for people with connections to Johns Hopkins University (mind you, I'm talking about the university, not the medical campus whose proximity is more toward Fell's Point, a whole other part of the city).

The weekend we were there we saw numerous families (with boisterous kids who overpowered the tiny indoor pool) and wedding events. Still, very pleasant if unremarkable.

We booked a suite and from what I could tell when wandering through halls when housekeepers were working, it was the same space as regular rooms (with slightly fustier furnishings, certainly no flat screen televisions while standard rooms had been upgraded) though suspect our bathroom -- with jacuzzi tub -- was an upgrade. Hate the kind of "suite" that basically puts the living room at the entrance (with no windows). Didn't really care for the room, frankly (though did appreciate the empty mini-fridge and liked the bathtub).

The other thing I didn't love about the hotel was that despite all these great outdoor spaces -- two patios off the pool, an area off the entrance that clearly has been marked as a gathering spot because chairs and tables, as yet unwrapped in mid-June and so useless -- was that the urban/suburban nature wasn't properly addressed. The restaurant (Alize something or other) seemed rather sad sack (though we enjoyed the bar), definitely not possessing any kind of buzz. In fact the hotel itself had a sort of sad sack air about it. Hallways reminded me of the kind of airport hotel that tracks in one night stays. The smoke scent in our room, ugh.

Will we stay there again? The Doubletree Inn at the Colonnade was certainly inoffensive but memorable? I love the neighborhood but next trip to Baltimore we'll give a try to the Radisson at Cross Keys and explore our urban/suburban options.

I stay at the Colonnade for all of the above reasons. I have had multiple stays at this hotel over time. It is the optimum location for me personally for business reasons in Baltimore and especially for Johns Hopkins alumni functions. Its proximity to Homewood Field permits me to avidly follow the country's most successful and storied lacrosse program.

I have recommended the hotel to many friends over the years.

The management here has got it together. Everyone there was very gracious, and seemed like very happy employees. Very classy place at a fair price. You feel comfortable immediately upon entering the hotel. Very clean.

We stayed overnight for a campus tour at Johns Hopkins - can't beat the location - right across the street.

The staff was wonderful and went above and beyond in all respects. The hotel is immaculate, and our suite was very pleasant. Great free wi-fi access in our room.

My only complaint - I wish they had a complimentary continental breakfast for guests or a discount for the Starbucks in the lobby. I would absolutely stay here again next time I visit Baltimore.

Terrible experience. Booked in Jan for a June visit, confirmed directly with hotel staff night before arrival, confirmed details of suite.
On arrival told suite not available, could only give room with two double beds for our family of four. Room turned out to have one double bed.
Went back to desk and then given two adjacent rooms, with a double bed each, no connecting door, but figured my husband and I would have to each sleep in one room with one child. One room stank of cigarette smoke.
Returned to desk again, manager personally took us to another pair of room, both of which stank of smoke. Management stated rooms were smoke free but would place machine to filter air. Machine had no effect.
Finally management decided to give us suite larger than origianl booking.
ENTIRE CHECK IN PROCESS TOOK OVER TWO HOURS WITH US RUNNING BACK AND FORTH TO DESK TO CHANGE ROOMS.
Although hotel conceded and did not charge us for one of the two nights, the time spent was worth much more than the cost of the room to my husband and me (we are a software development consultant and a physician respectively). Will never ever stay at a Doubletree hotel or indeed a Hilton again.

I think most of the crappy reviews were written before this hotel was given a complete renovation in December 2007. First, the hotel staff was nothing but wonderful and friendly, and helpful. The place looks new, with all the renovations done. The room was great with granite countertop in bathroom, wall in shower, and counter in walkway (coffee pot area). Flat screen tv, mp3 player plug in on the alarm clock, and very quick valet service. I would suggest valet instead of self park due to the fact that with valet it is one price per day ($24) no matter how many times you go in and out. There was a nice outdoor garden area with tables and chairs set up. We ordered in and ate out there. We have 2 children under the age of 3, so going out to dinner can be a hassle. We really enjoyed our stay, and would come back here on our next visit to Baltimore without question.
