Wonderful Italian restaurant in Baltimore (who knew?) with excellent choices of food and wine, superb service, friendly atmosphere. Atmosphere downgraded because of music choice..more noisy than music. Otherwise, a great find.

We were sadly disappointed with this experience. The restaurant was highly recommended but didn't come close to justifying the expense. Service was horrible. When we commented, we were told that a "runner" had quit and they were working short-handed. Hardly a plausible or acceptable excuse for rudeness, mixed up orders, and sloppy presentation. To partly offset, the food, when it finally arrived, was quite good. BUT WE WILL NOT RETURN!

MR. Paul, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointing experience.
We strive for excellence and perfection at Sotto Sopra.
It's True that we have experienced some turn over recently, but nothing to warrant such a bad experience. I have hired a new general manager to oversee operations and to address all these specific issues.
Your experience was clearly unacceptable to me as the owner of this establishment for which I have worked hard to establish 17 years now.

My husband and I enjoyed a memorable meal on a recent visit from Boston. Everything from the ambience to the service and food was par excellence. The pork osso bucco, a house specialty, was everything and more that our waiter promised and the house made pasta was fantastic. We look forward to visiting again when we next visit our nephew, a student at Loyola. Two great reasons to return to Baltimore!

A very busy Saturday night was their excuse, normally 130 plates but today 200. Beautiful, sophisticated City restaurant, Fabulous food, 9 of us by the bar, birthday dinner, and UNFORTUNATELY, mandatory 18% gratuity. So, we spent 4 hours, 6:30 - 10:30, an hour or more too long because the Waiter left us. He spent the first two hours with us, everything was good, abeit a bit slow, didn't have to worry about drinking too much because it was too busy. At one point, a drink we wanted wasn't available, nor was a proper glass. Then, Waiter said he was turning us over to another server, who was scarce. One of our party received the wrong entree. We were all ready to go, and no server. Assuming Waiter #1 received the mandatory gratuity, so he was through with us. ALTHOUGH HE DID FINALLY RETURN TO HANDLE OUR BILL!

Dining out for Italian is a challenge in Baltimore--tacky locales, tradition without quality, tired service. Sotto Sopra is above and beyond all of that. The ambience is relaxed and trendy, the music provides nice background without being intrusive. The tables are far enough apart that you would have to strain to hear your neighbors' conversation. Our server (a lovely Russian girl whose name, I'm embarrassed to say, I've forgotten) was attentive and helpful, offering suggestions and explanations as needed. The food is stellar. We split two appetizers, the first being the Caesar Salad. I know, I know--ho hum. But this salad is a cut above. Long leaves of romaine are tucked into what looked like a brown paper bag that turned out to be a crust of some sort--beautiful--and the dressing was redolent of garlic and anchovy and black pepper without being overwhelmed by any one ingredient. add a large translucent sheet of parmesan and a piece of oven-roasted tomato for color and the salad was complete. Our other appetizer was Cozze Saltate al Curry e Latte di Cocco (mussels in a coconut curry sauce). The P.E.I. mussels were tender little jewels in a very delicate broth full of flavor, though the use of curry was done with a light enough hand to not overshadow the flavor of the mussels. For mains, we had the Sacchetti di Zucca con Salsiccia--beautiful little sacks of pumpkin pasta full of pumpkin served in a cream sauce with crispy pieces of homemade Italian sausage. The other main was Spaghetti Neri alla Chitarra--squid ink spaghetti in a light cream sauce with crab and crawfish. The pasta was al dente with a great mouth feel, the seafood maintained their respective flavors and textures and the addition of mushrooms made this dish. For dessert we shared apple pie and ice cream. The filling of apples was enveloped by a thin crust and quickly fried to a very crisp texture making for a very light dessert. The pie was accompanied by a scoop of luscious salted caramel ice cream. The meal was everything we hope it would be and more and we didn't feel as if they had picked our pocket. This will be our go-to spot for Italian.
