“Good ethnic food great price”
Reviewed December 16, 2012 via mobile

I've been here a handful of times. Each time I go I wonder why I have waited so long to go back. Had a lamb special marinated in dried apricots...yum! Ordered a bottle of cote de rhone & was delish w my lamb. Definitely a great place. Too bad there Aren't more of a variety of ethnic options in Baltimore.

The Helmand has been a favorite of mine for many, many years. The food is delicious. I have eaten here more than 20 times and have never had a disappointing meal. A plus for me is that they have many choices which are vegetarian along with many which are not. Some of my favorites are the pumpkin appetizer, the mushroom lawand, naan, and the vegetarian sampler. Friends and family love the lamb lawand, mantwo, and kebabs.

“The Helmand at Baltimore”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

If you are looking for good food in an unpretentious and cozy environment to dine in, this is your place. The staff were charming and very helpful. They made you feel like you're at a friend's place. They were also innovators at heart (A dinner mate of mine had her jacket zip stuck and a waiter came up with this idea of using a paper clip!).
And the food was just amazing. They served quite a number of Afghan dishes with decent wine list.

“tasty food...was better last time”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

went on FRI, at 6PM. a few people were in there. cozy and warm thankfully. seated fast, friendly waiter. food came fast to our table, almost too quickly for our liking.

good flavors. enjoy the cuisine of the region alot

Aushak - Afghan ravioli filled with leeks, served on yogurt-mint and topped with ground beef sauce - tasty and savory ($5.25)

Bawlani - pan-fried twin pastry shells filled with leeks and spiced potatoes, garnished with yogurt and mint. ($5.25)

we really liked both, but the portions were small. the aushak was an above average ravioli size and the bawlani was the size of a medium samosa

we both got specials for entrees. She got the mahi stew, very nice, tender fish. fresh and an ok size

I got the lamb stew...but it was more like a bowl of flavorful sauce, a bunch of mushrooms and 4 small cubes of lamb. For $18, i was not pleased with the portion.

seems nickel and dime to me these days...especially when $4.50 is charged for bread service.

was better and more of an occasion place last time I went.

“Awsome middle eastern type cuisine”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

I had the pleasure of dining here the other evening after a show at the Hippodrome with a mixed family group. What a treat! We had fairly early reservations which was a good idea because the place filled up. The waiters and staff were very attentive and informative. Our fairly large table decided we wanted to try a variety of the succulent dishes and had the prefix variety, where they basically bring samples of pretty much their whole menu to the table to share. It's hard to remember the great variety, but all were delicious to me. I agree with other writers who also recommend the terrific pumpkin appetizer. And all of this was quite reasonable, many dishes were less expensive, the all in one meal was about $30 per person. You won't be dissapointed if you like Greek/middle eastern style/type food although it is quite distinct from Greek fare.
