“Where Kitchen Chemistry meets Diners' Desires”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Alchemy, a small restaurant in the Hampden section of Baltimore, is owned by a husband/wife team--both active in the kitchen. The food is outstanding and the specials often are quite unique. My husband and I have dined there several times taking different friends with us. All have been delighted with the food, the service and the warm atmosphere. Salads are delicious, soups are outstanding and every entre' we have eaten has been fantastic--salmon, duck, short ribs, and a rack of lamb that is a FULL--all nine ribs--rack. We also have had Travis for a waiter each time and he is knowledgable and delightful. The owners are always present and pay as much attention to the front of the restaurant as to the kitchen. Go, order whatever you desire, it will all be delicious.

“The parking situation sucks, but...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

once you're in the door and get past the ambivalent hostess, the meal is definitely worth the effort. We had a wonderful server, Travis, who knew every inch of the restaurant's interesting, varied dinner menu and Restaurant Week menu. We each ordered three different apps. and entrees, and ALL were uniformly excellent. The salads were beautiful, fresh and w/ tasty components, while the cream of crab soup was rich and full of chunks of crabmeat. I had the shortrib platter, real comfort food, while my tablemates had the red snapper and salmon. All entrees were surrounded by artistically arranged vegetables, and Travis brought another plate of mixed veg. for the table to share.

Drinks were generously sized and delicious: margarita and Jack Daniels/rocks.

We took home our desserts for later because we were stuffed. A bit disappointed by the small piece of carrot cake, which had an overly sweet frosting and not up to the traditional standard recipe.

The owner is accessible and delightful. Should note there is a main dining room and another one up a long flight of stairs, so when you make a reservation, specify where you want to sit.
There are booths for privacy or tables/banquettes in an intimate setting.

We'll be back!

“Hon, this is the place to eat!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

A group of us came here on the recommendation of a friend who had discovered it during restaurant week. We decided to take advantage of the current restaurant week by trying some place new to us. We actually found street parking on a Sunday afternoon, which is almost impossible in this area! We were quickly seated and our server was very nice. Three of us started with Irish coffees, which were smooth and addictive; they add Baileys to the mix which softens the Irish whiskey. The specials included appetizer and entree. Cream of crab soup was the most popular choice and was delish! Although the cup of soup looked small, it was so rich that nobody who ordered it could finish their next course. The house salad was an excellent starter also and left room for eating more. The group feasted on burgers, Monte Cristos, portebellos, and chorizo. The only negative was that the chorizo was very greasy and was not eaten but taken home for the benefit of a spouse. All but the salad eater left with "doggy bags." We all agreed it was worth returning to try more.

“A Surprising Treasure in Hampden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

We were in Hampden to see the "Miracle on 34th St." lights, and were very pleasantly surprised by our dining experience at Alchemy. This is a small restaurant on The Avenue (36th St.) featuring unique dishes extremely well-prepared, and superb service. Two of our party of six were from out of town and enjoyed the excellent crab cakes; the rest of us feasted on different dishes that were all out of the ordinary and very flavorful. The soups and desserts were also wonderful. All in all, Alchemy provides a good reason to go back to Hampden even after the Chrismas lights have been taken down.

“good food & service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

I had a perfect lunch experience with a friend. We didn't feel like a sandwich and although the menu did have an extensive selection of sandwiches, the menu offered some great appetizers and salads. The Onion Au Gratin soup was creamy & cheesy without being stodgy. I loved the grilled avocado salad with pomegranate vinegraitte. I was also surprised at the extensive dessert selection and was not disappointed in the carrot cake (with limoncello cream cheese frosting!).
