“Very nice hotel, great pet policy!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2010

We were looking for a quick getaway over the fourth of July weekend, and the prospect of a Kimpton Hotel for reasonable price (~$150) THAT ALLOWED DOGS sealed the deal for us. We weren't disappointed. The hotel was in a beautiful restored building (former home of the B&O Railway). The location was not quite central (it was in what felt like a business district, which at night and on the weekend felt a little deserted). However, the hotel itself was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. It was an easy walk to the harbor.

Rooms were large - we had a double room, which worked out fine for four people (2 adults, a 13 and 16 year old). I had noted on my reservation that we would be bringing our dog (no extra charge), and when we arrived, there was even a small dog bed and dog dish of food/water for our pet! Staff was friendly. Room was very clean and comfortable. Only complaint was that we were awakened in the night by loud talkers next door - so maybe the soundproofing isn't as great as one would expect in an old building. But other than that, we had a great stay.

One note: parking at the hotel is $36. However, after 5 or so on the weekend, street parking is free, and seemed abundant (check the parking ticket machines on the street - it seems different parts of town have different regulations and hours). So for our Saturday overnight stay, we just parked on the street right down the block from the hotel.

First off everyone at the hotel was very nice and accommodating. We loved our corner room and the toiletries. However, I guess our expectations were really high based on all the great reviews on Tripadvisor. I know the hotel is historic but the halls and entrance was worn, had a very odd smell, carpet stains and just in need of a good cleaning. I also wouldn't recommend walking around here at night. We were in town for a conference at the convention center and thought we'd be okay to walk back and forth. It was only a ten minute walk but those were some scary moments! There are a lot of scary people hanging around outside. Nice hotel itself, but next time I'll stay closer to the Harbour or convention center.

First the good:
-The rooms are spacious and have very high ceilings which make them seem even more so
-Our bathroom was incredible. We had a giant two person tub with seats and a separate shower.
-The water pressure is great
-Staff is very friendly
Now the bad:
-We checked in in the evening, turned down the thermostat, and went to bed. Tossed and turned all night from being too hot. In the morning found out why--the room was 74 when it was set for 65. We had to be moved to a different room. If I have the inconvenience of having to pack up all my things and move down to a lower floor (in a nice, 4 star hotel), I'd like to be compensated in some day-- a breakfast voucher, have a day of parking taken off, something. We got nothing.
-The first morning we went to the front desk to get our car. They said to go downstairs and it would be ready in 10 mins. We waited 15 then asked the valet. He said they hadn't gotten the request and we had to wait another 10 mins to get the car.
-The hotel isn't really condusive to walking to the harbor, especially in July heat. We had to drive everywhere we went.
-We booked through a third party. I printed out the paperwork before we left in case there was a problem at check-in. After we got to the room I read the fine print and a free breakfast was included in our reservation. We were never told this at check-in. Had I not brought the paperwork, read the fine print, and asked the front desk we wouldn't have received our breakfast.

I really am wowed by all the positive reviews on this site. I don't consider myself a picky traveler and was not impressed by this hotel. Had I been staying at an inexpensive chain, I would be satisfied. But considering this is a 4 star hotel I was disappointed and would not return.

The Monaco Hotels have always been pretty high on my list -- I've always liked the chic design, the goldfish, and the Aveda toiletries -- but the addition of zebra and leopard print bathrobes has sealed the deal!

Our room was a little small but we didn't mind because we were only there for a quick overnight. We did appreciate the large walk-in shower and the fluffy towels. Best of all, though were the robes. So fun!!

We enjoyed a glass of sangria at the wine reception before heading out for the evening but were disappointed when we returned that the B&O Restaurant had stopped serving food (including dessert) at 9 pm. When it came time to check out, we had an extremely helpful desk clerk, Christine, who looked up a parking coupon on the internet and offered to print our boarding passes.

It was a short stay, but one we look forward to repeating.

We had the pleasure of staying in this hotel last October. My only regret about the entire stay is thy it's taken us this long to write a review. Truly enjoyed the experience, large rooms, amazing staff, originally and uniquely decorated rooms. Complimentary wine reception and milk and cookies were the icing on the cake! Very impressed and would love to return. Many thanks for an amazing stay.

A very good, clean, comfortable hotel with very nice staff. Comfortable room with some wonderful amenities offered throughout the day. The hotel is very convenient, within walking-blocks from the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards. It does however feel a little isolated/deserted, given it is amongst what seems to be office buildings ... but just not many people on the streets, day or night, and there are some 'homeless'/street people in the area. We had no problems however, with its location. The hotel, oddly, is in a converted office building (?), sharing the building with offices. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted to a classic, marble lobby for the building and then a sign ... pointing to use the left elevators for the hotel and the right elevators for the offices. You must go to the hotel's "lobby" (next level up), to register. Not a biggie, but seemed odd .... Let's move on to our review:

Room & Amenities: Very nice room, with king size bed, lacquer-red credenza/desk, chair, LCD TV, along with in-room safe inside the closet that included (2) 'stylish' (think tiger stripes!) bathrobes and an umbrella. These are nice touches to details! Some other hotels have only 1 robe-always white or no umbrella ! The bed was super comfortable, not too firm, not too soft. The bathroom was very spacious, with walk-in shower (no tub). We asked one of the cleaning people to just see another room as a comparison, and that one was larger with tub and a couch too ! We probably got a smaller room, given we went the Priceline route (on the cheap!) Back to the room: high ceilings, eclectic colors including red credenza/desk, gold wall paper, blue fabric headboard panels, trunk-style nightstands, paisley rolling curtains, but all of it was very tasteful and worked fine. We wish the curtains had more blackout-coverage, as we awoke to streams of sunlight (through the sides) each morning, but thankfully not hungover which would have made it worse. A mini-bar and chargeable snacks were available, along with a list in the bathroom, of beyond-the-basic toiletries available, optional items you may have forgotten - some free, some not, but again nice touch! Now on to the amenities, which we really enjoyed: in their "Living Room" ... a sitting area near the front desk, had an eclectic collection of chairs, couches, and sofas for guests, with a pseudo-fireplace, the hotel provided some tasty treats throughout the day. In the morning, coffee, tea, etc (not full breakfast), early afternoon = cold lemonade and cold tea, mid afternoon = fresh chocolate chip cookies and milk, evenings = wine tasting..... again, nice touches ! There is a gym/fitness center that was nice. We did not try the hotel's restaurant, B&O American bistro ... menu seemed ok, but pricey like all hotel restaurants. We had one pet peeve ... the business center that provided (2) computers with a printer was chargeable. Presumably, as Kimpton loyalty members, we wouldn't be charged, but we weren't going to bother using the ones there, as it requested a credit card. Instead, we accessed the internet free-of-charge in our room.

Service: Very nice staff. Front desk was friendly. We did not request in-room dining, so cannot comment. Cleaning people were super nice (especially the one who allowed us to see another room to compare), and friendly. The room was always perfect when we returned, clean and with no issues. Doormen: minimal greeting and acknowledgment, probably because we didn't need them, but we're ok with that.

Summary: A very good, clean, comfortable hotel with pleasant staff ... and most fetching, the drinks and treats throughout the day. As we noted above, there were nice detail touches we noticed throughout our stay there. It is very convenient to the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards, as well as public transportation options. Useful Tip: Getting around: use the "Charm City Circulator" bus = FREE of charge for (2) lines: Purple and Orange. Happy Hotel-ling !

I've been to really nice hotels like the Hyatt and Westin and a lot of other independent boutiques to suites at Casinos that I had rated considerably high. However, at Hotel Monaco, I was impressed with the decor as well as the size of the room. Inside the hotel from the stairwell, to the lobby it looked as though I were transported to a European manor. It was beautiful, elegant and lovely. The lobby had a fireplace, plenty of seats and couches and even an area to play chess.

The people there were lovely, accomodating our needs and answering our questions in regards to finding things in the area. It's about 10 blocks away from the aquarium/harbor and a cab ride from the hotel to there was $6.60. Walking wise took about 15 minutes.

I stayed on the 8th floor and upon entering our room, I had initially thought it was small since the closet and mini bar happens to be the first thing you see when you enter but when you actually enter the room, it's amazing. The height of the room is about 1.5 higher than that of the standard room size so it appeared to be incredibly spacious. Normally, I could reach the ceiling if I were to stand on it and jump (I'm 5'8") but I tried and I think I was perhaps 1-2ft from reaching the ceiling. The bed is the best bed I have ever slept on...slept like a baby. Normally, the "Heavenly Bed" at the Westin is impressive but this bed you just melt on along with the douvet and super soft pillows (goose feather, perhaps?). Bed was a king but felt like a California King. Nice LG flat screen and an incredibly large window that overlooked the block.

The bathroom was eco friendly but my was it spectacular. It was a LARGE, half enclosed shower stall. Sliding bathroom doors that also serve as full size mirrors (very efficient). Bath products were Aveda and the walls inside the bathroom wasn't your traditional tile/wall paper/painted wall...it had a quilted pattern and felt as though it were made from leather.

Carpet was super soft and plush and the tiles in the bathroom were nice. Had to leave AC at 65 degrees in order to have a nice, cool room. Other than that minor setback, best place ever.

NOTE: If you're staying here for the weekend, don't park at the hotel parking garage. I believe it's $36 a day or for the weekend. Instead, park on the side street which is free during the weekend. Don't mind the parking meters or signs that say "No stopping 4-6pm Monday-Friday" a block across from the hotel. We asked the hotel staff and they said it was free during the weekend so we parked there and saved ourselves $36!
