From the moment we first walked into this hotel, all we had to say was "WOW!" We had nothing but a positive experience here, and were sorry to have only stayed one night. Like the majority of the reviewers on here, we thought this place was truly wonderful!
When we first arrived outside the hotel, we asked the doorman about the parking situation - he informed us that one option was valet, but this would be $36/day. He told us that the other option was a lot 2 blocks up which charged $6/day on weekends - this saved us quite a bit of money.
As we headed into the hotel after parking, we were awestricken by the beauty of the historic building. An enormous marble staircase cascaded upwards, and stained glass windows adorned the inside of the front door. The doormen welcomed us and directed us exactly where to go. We went up the elevator to the lobby, which was equally attractive. Next to the lobby was a warm, welcoming living room (?) with an electric fireplace. Attendants in the lobby were all helpful and polite.
We headed up to our room, the Mediterranean Suite, which was the most impressive hotel room we had ever seen! The room was very large - it had floor to ceiling windows, a living room with a flat screen TV, a bedroom with ANOTHER flat screen TV, and a bathroom with a large vanity/mirror, shower/spa tub combo and a separate room within the bathroom with the toilet. Whimsical touches included zebra/leopard print terry bathrobes in the room, a light on the front closet that was a picture of an old railroad train, and leather walls in the bathroom. And the king-sized bed was SUPER comfortable! Best sleep I've EVER gotten in a hotel room :)
After a day of sightseeing in the harbor (which was a bit of a walk, but not terribly far), we headed back to the hotel and ate at the B&O Restaurant downstairs. We had not made reservations on Saturday night (a mistake on our part), but easily found a seat at the spacious downstairs bar - which was not crowded, and we got served very quickly. The cauliflower/lobster bisque was delicious, as was the apple turnover! Drinks were good too, and the server/bartender we had was friendly and knew a great deal about items on the menu. For a hotel restaurant, this one was excellent!
On our second and final day, we wanted to go sightseeing after checking out, but wanted to leave our bags behind at the hotel. We did not even have to ask the lobby attendant about this - he asked us if we needed someone to take our bags and a bellhop appeared right before our eyes almost instantly! Getting our bags back was equally easy - as we were about to leave for the evening, the bellhop got our bags (again, almost instantly!), and wished us a safe trip home.
We would recommend the Hotel Monaco to anyone who is planning a stay in Baltimore. It is very reasonably priced, EXTREMELY clean, and relatively close to the harbor. The accomodations and service were exceptional. If we return to Baltimore, we will surely be staying here!!!
