Owner description: Be prepared for the unusual and imaginative at this museum housing works by non-mainstream artists, including the "whirligig", a 55-foot wind-powered sculpture, a 10-foot model of the Lusitania made entirely out of match sticks and a mobile that spans three floors.

Capture the quirkiness of Baltimore by visiting the American Visionary Art Museum. This place is not for the ordinary museum goer, but for those who are very broad minded about what constitutes art. If you go, don't miss the Museum store, full of strange and wonderful stuff.

Always something different, always something of interest. Good parking nearby, cafe works. I was most interested in quilts which focused on the holocaust experience of the quilt makers...who knew such existed?

There was so much creativity in every corner from Fifi in pink net to the mad scientist's lab to folk-decorated Nazi helmets. There is also a terrific restaurant on the top floor called Mr. Rain's Fun House, which carries creativity into its mixed drinks. My favorite was String Theory.

This is the most awesome place. Creative and truly original works of art curated around themes. This is something you won't find elsewhere--a perfect fit for Baltimore!

Second visit to Baltimore? Already been to the American Visionary Arts Museum? Great - then you're ready for your next trip there! The exhibits are so dramatically different each time that it makes a second visit worthwhile. And the gift shop alone is like a museum, and as locals we like to wander in for a bit of fun and for some fun gifts. Need more incentive? If you are a Bank of America customer, you get free admission on the first weekend of each month, too (at least in 2013). We just took my 91 year old mother there, and she was absolutely enchanted, making me stop at the quirkiest exhibits so she could get a closer look. Something for everyone!
