Unbelievable beauty! Not a scary structure as some can be. This is a bright and light church. There are flowers on the ceiling and a beautiful dome in the center. Although it has the making of a grand cathedral, it is unlike many I've seen before. It is airy and joyful and serene. The Altars are beautiful and the aisles sloped just so, you'll say ahhhh. There is a lower level where a museum and various busts are exhibited all well lite. A worshiper who has attended since he was a boy gave up some background on the structure and it's renovation to its present state. You can't miss it as it has large Roman columns in the front and it's right across the street from the Library which also a site to behold.

Tours are typically at 10, 11 and 1 with a suggested donation of $2pp. The tour made us appreciate its beauty, design and importance even more.

This site is worth a visit to just view the interior of a Roman-type basilica as a Catholic church. Advertised as "America's First Cathedral," the high, vaulted ceilings, dome, and ornate sanctuary is a visual treat. In the lower levels, there is the crypt which where many of the Archbishops of Baltimore are laid to rest.
Pope John Paul II visited the basilica and there is a beautiful prayer garden bearing his name nearby.
You can do a self-guided tour or with a guide (donations are accepted).

The shrine is a beautiful piece of artwork unto itself. It is truly worth exploring every inch of this place, as each area is different. The gift shop has religious gifts that are very unique and hard to find. Quite a gem!
