This site is worth a visit to just view the interior of a Roman-type basilica as a Catholic church. Advertised as "America's First Cathedral," the high, vaulted ceilings, dome, and ornate sanctuary is a visual treat. In the lower levels, there is the crypt which where many of the Archbishops of Baltimore are laid to rest.
Pope John Paul II visited the basilica and there is a beautiful prayer garden bearing his name nearby.
You can do a self-guided tour or with a guide (donations are accepted).

The shrine is a beautiful piece of artwork unto itself. It is truly worth exploring every inch of this place, as each area is different. The gift shop has religious gifts that are very unique and hard to find. Quite a gem!

This recommendation came from our breakfast waitress at The Four Seasons. I had asked her what she like doing/seeing in Baltimore that might be a bit out of the ordinary. "The Basilica" was her first choice. It was about a 30 minute walk from the hotel and well worth it. Regardless of your religious affiliation this is a must see. I was raised a Catholic so I might be somewhat biased but the cathedral is absolutely magnificent. Historically, it was the first metropolitan cathedral constructed after the adoption of The Constitution. You can get a tour or you can do a tour by yourself. My time was limited so I went by myself. Very easy, very self explanatory although when I go again I will take an official tour as I am sure that the guides can offer something extra.

Built by Benjamin Latrobe, it was certified as the first of its kind in the United States of America! A trend has began here . .
