“Breathtakingly Beautiful”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We try to attend the Christmas Mass here each year and added the Easter Mass as it was fully reopening from prior storm damage. This is the most beautiful cathedral - the colors are calming and serene, it feels very light and provides the sanctuary many seek when attending mass. There is plenty of room for many, but does not have the cavernous feel I get elsewhere. The decorating that is done for holiday masses is refined and striking - never overdone!

“Visit after the construction”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

THis is a beautiful basillica. I had seen it a few years ago on another visit, and many years before. It is a good visit, especially for someone interested in Catholic history, BUT I WOULDN'T ADVISE GOING NOW. We were not even able to get in the sanctuary. You may have to wait a while for the post earthquake repair to be done.

“Hallowed shrine”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

The Basilica is being updated. The dome over the altar suffered damage in the earthquake last year. There are draperies over the ceiling. So you will not be able to see many of the highlights of the interior.

This is a shrine to Mary and is listed as one of the places to visit during this pilgrimmage year. The historic basis of this church make it a must see.

Many of the beautful vestments and altar pieces are on view in the museum in the basement. There is also a gift shop

“The birthplace of Catholicism in America”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

The Bassilica in Baltimore is really the Cathedral of the Premier See, which means it is the center of the first American Archdiocese. The building has been wonderfully renovated back to its original configuration in the main church, with a light and airy interior that is a testament to Latrobe's architectural vision. The catacombs underneath are open for tours (not sure of the schedule) and showcase the history of the church in Baltimore, and America.

This is a must see for anyone who is a fan of church history or early American architecture.

“Recovering from the earthquake”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

We went to Sunday Mass which was beautiful and the priest had a relevant sermon. We were disappointed to see that the ceiling was under repair so we were unable to see much of it because of tarps that were everywhere. Music was tops.
