Our understanding is that this was the first Basilica in the U.S. Even if it was not, it is well worth seeing for the Under-croft with its beautiful brickwork that is perfectly lit. The architecture with it's reverse arches are amazing!

But I couldn't get inside because of the renovations being made due to the earthquake. The outside is beautiful and breathtaking, as is the Pope John Paul II garden. I am hoping the repairs will be finished by my next trip.

Unfortunately, the Basilica recently suffered earthquake damage, so on weekdays access is limited as workers make needed repairs. The "undercroft" is usually accessible and holds some museum pieces that have been moved from elsewhere; it is very interesting in a catacombs-like way. The weekend I visited, there was a tour following the 10:45 Sunday Mass which enabled one to see most of the important areas and was very informative. Make sure you call or check the website before visiting, as I'm sure the availability varies as work is done and equipment shifted about.

I liked the simplicity of the architecture. This Basilica is unlike any you might have seen in Italy. If you like visiting churches, this is worthwhile.

My husband and I went on the private tour of this and we were not disappointed. Very interesting information. Got to touch an alter that the former pope prayed on.
