“Has advantages and disadvantages”
Reviewed June 23, 2008

The main advantage of the Admiral Fell is its proximity to the Inner Harbor area. Travel by water taxi is easy - the pier is right across the street, which we found a great advantage over trying to navigate the terribly congested streets in the area with very aggressive drivers. At first impression, the hotel looks lovely and colonial, and our room had attractive canopy beds. We liked the fact that there was free bottled water in the room as well However, within a very short time, we found the room small for two adults and a teenager; the bathroom's lack of exhaust created a steamy, always damp room; the internet connection did not work even when the mechanic came to check it out. We asked for a room off the street because we heard about the noise of street-facing rooms. Yet we awoke to the sounds of a brawl outside our room on the weekend, and there was no way we could sleep. Fearing the worst, we called the front desk to see if they would contact the police but could not reach anyone at the front desk. The next day we were told that this experience is standard fare on the weekend because the hotel is basically surrounded by bars that all close around the same time - 1 am. We also did not find the front desk to be particularly attentive nor helpful. And parking is ridiculous - rather than pay $29/day for valet parking, we walked several blocks to self-park at a city garage. Walking our wheeling bags over cobbled streets was no picnic.

We stayed at the Admiral Fell because of its convenient harborfront location. Our room was small, which we expected in a historic hotel; what we didn't expect was the poor housekeeping and maintenance. The glass shelf above the sink was not secured properly, so things slid off and the shelf itself was in danger of coming loose. It was difficult to close the sink drain. The walls in the bathroom looked grungy, and the transition from the room to the bathroom was filthy. Although the air conditioner cooled the room, it did nothing to remove the oppressive humidity. "Afternoon tea" turned out to be one glass of iced tea--not even a cookie. The staff member who led the tea as if he were a resident 150 years ago was interesting; other staff members were pleasant also. Breakfast is not included in the room rate. We ate at a creperie across the street. Parking was not a problem but it can be at peak time. Things have definitely gone downhill since my previous visit 15 years ago.

Stayed here last weekend while in town for 2 Red Sox games. Got a decent rate off of Quikbook.

Benefits
Location in Fell's Point is absolutely perfect. Many restaurants / bars within walking distance. Also, right near the water taxi launch.
Harbor Magic package included free breakfast (initially included on my bill at checkout - but was removed). The free breakfast was your typical buffett. This package also included a lot of coupons for buy 1, get 1 drink free at many bars. Some restrictions do apply so some weren't able to be used.
Room was decent sized and clean.

Drawbacks
Smoke alarm went off while getting out of the shower due to the water vapor. Talk about making sure you are awake.
$29 / day valet charge. Parking is very limited so you don't have many options. Next time I come - I will make sure not to have a car. You don't need 1 in Baltimore anyways!

The Admiral Fell Inn has lots of charm and an interesting location but has gotten really shabby. The rooms are in need of paint and updating (not to make them more modern, but to make them more in keeping with travelers' expectations). The staff is very friendly and helpful, but we were overcharged on our room rate, and the parking has gone up to $29 a night, close to NY rates. The breakfast buffet is large but is not very high quality, and I would not recommend it to anyone who wants more than packaged goods for breakfast. There are many good breakfast places in the area which are cheaper and better. Our room was on the street and was incredibly noisy on the weekend, so much so that the other person in the room had to use ear plugs to sleep. There are many clubs in the area which stay open late and are full of people having a good time. Because of no-smoking rules inside the clubs, many of them smoke outside which causes large groups to hang out. The Inn should put triple pane glass on the front windows, just as they do in Europe to insulate against noise. I would not recommend the Inn or stay there again, since there are much better hotels at similar rates in the Inner Harbor or elsewhere in Baltimore.

Please allow me to introduce myself as the new Hotel Manager for the Admiral Fell Inn.

I do appreciate your comments and want to let you know we are upgrading many areas of the hotel.

In mid-May 2008 we replaced all the guest room carpeting and have completed a 'deep clean' of all of our guest rooms.

Additionally, we just added a full time maintenance person to our staff whose focus will be on the preventative maintenance of each of our guest rooms, including painting.

Earlier this month we enhanced and moved Breakfast from our basement level Stone Room (the area of the hotel which dates back to 1760) to our PettyCoat TeaRoom, located just off the lobby.

A second restaurant has opened in the Stone Room where Breakfast was served. A slightly more upscale restaurant fits this romantic atmosphere more appropriately.

As with many Urban Cities, parking is very limited. Valet parking is more expensive than street parking, but is not overly priced in comparison to other area valet services.

Again, thank you for your comments. We review all comments so we can continually improve to make everyones stay more enjoyable.

Historically Yours,

Jason Curtis

Whether or not you will enjoy this hotel depends on whether you're the kind of traveler who likes history and ambiance or the kind of traveler who likes to stay at a chain hotel and know exactly what to expect. For the more-flexible traveler, this hotel should prove to be a nice experience. (I am kind of a mix, but am trying to learn to be more of the adventurous type.)

Yes, the price was high but not out of line with other Inner Harbor lodging. I had been warned that there was a lot of street noise, so I took my white noise machine with me and plugged it in by the bed. (Slept like a baby.) The very reason there is street noise, though, is the very thing that makes this a very convenient place to stay: It's right in the middle of where you want to be! I'm not much of a walker, so this was a great choice since it's only steps from a water taxi stop. There is a cute little park across the street and many cute little shops within walking distance (including ice cream - yay!)

The negatives: The pillow shams were like you would find in someone's guest room, and I was a bit afraid to put my head on them since they don't look like the type of thing that would get washed after every guest. (There were 3 pillows in regular white pillow cases, though, so it was ok.) Also, there was a little stain on one of the bath towels which creeped me out. Not the world's best water pressure in the shower, but it was clean.

The positives (which more than made up for the negs): The staff is WONDERFUL! There are afternoon tea parties complete with amusing "ghost" hosts. The valets are always ready to get your car at a moment's notice. The breakfast was delicious and served in a charming room very unlike at a chain motel where you eat crammed into some lobby.

Would I return? Absolutely - just don't forget earplugs or a noise machine if you're staying anywhere in Inner Harbor and you'll have a great time.

let me start by saying that the hotel is beautiful. Customer service is above and beyond. buffet breakfast is very nice. Area is quaint and historical. Everything is a fast free shuttle ride away or you can use the water taxi located across the street. Went there with family of 5 from April 19 - 22. When I go back next April I will stay there again. The kids ages 14 and 9 thought it was great even without a pool. Baltimore has so much to do that a pool is not necessary. At night they were so tired they just wanted to go to sleep. We spent alot of time at the inner harbor and none of those hotels impressed me. They lacked the character that this hotel had. There is so much to do I could have stayed a couple more days. Once you get to the inner harbor which is beautiful you can walk to everything. The rooms at hotel are georgous and very comfortable. They have internet hookups in room. The housekeeping staff is very impressive, The room was cleaned spotless everyday. If you needed extra towel or glasses or coffee and you left a little note on desk it was there when you returned.
The hotel staff was always smileing, very polite, and if you had any
questions about attractions or resturants they had the answers.
We really felt that they had the best customer service we had ever seen. We read the reviews before we booked and were a little leary with some of the negative ones glad they didnt scare us off because this place is a real gem!!!!!

We loved our weekend at the Admiral Fell Inn. Great location, just steps to bars, restaurants, and shops in Fell's Point and only a few minutes to the Inner Harbor. The hotel is full of character with ghost tours beginning in the lobby - a nice change of pace from the typical hotel chain. Very clean rooms and a friendly staff made it even better. Parking was the only issue. Valet is available at a charge, but there are garages close by for much less. Just don't park in the PMI garage. It is CLOSED on Sunday, so you will not get your car out. Also, try the water taxi for quick travel. They give you food and drink coupons too for many of the bars in Fell's Point. We can't wait to go back to Baltimore and we'll most likely stay at the Admiral Fell Inn!
