Owner description: The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art-including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.* The museum is currently undergoing an unprecedented $28 million renovation to provide visitors with a more welcoming environment and more imaginative and inspiring encounters with art. The BMA is remaining open throughout the multi-year project so that visitors can enjoy its outstanding selection of European and American painting and sculpture from the 17th through 20th centuries and the newly reinstalled Contemporary Wing with 14 galleries showcasing the art of our time. Two beautifully landscaped gardens display an array of 20th-century sculpture that is an oasis in the city. The museum's 100th anniversary will be celebrated in November 2014 with the reopening of the grand historic entrance designed by John Russell Pope and a beautiful new presentation of the museum's distinguished collection of American art. Subsequent reopenings include expanded galleries for the African and Asian art collections and a new learning and creativity center that will open in 2015. Since 2006, the BMA has eliminated general admission fees so that everyone can enjoy the power of art. * Many of the BMA's works by Matisse are part of a special exhibition traveling to museums in Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and San Antonio in 2013 and 2014. If you are visiting to see a specific artwork, please call the BMA Box Office to make sure it will be on view.

Much better than I anticipated - a little off the beaten path, but worth the trip. The new contemporary wing is great and don't miss the Sarah Oppenheimer installations.

I was a chaperone for my son's kindergarten class field and it was such a nicely planned day. The docent (Mr. Wagner I believe) was wonderful with the kids, made it interactive and fun. Very nice outdoor sculpture garden as well.

The BMA is a beautiful museum and a must- see for lovers of art. While much of the museum is currently undergoing renovation, the Cone Collection of Matisses and other early 20th c work is outstanding, and the contemporary and European collections also impressive.
Highly recommend a visit, as well as lunch at Gertrude's (the museum restaurant) - be sure to make a reservation and ask to sit in the sculpture garden outside if space and weather permit.

The BMA is a very nice way to spend a half day or full day in Baltimore. It's not downtown, but the cab fare from the waterfont was $12. Admission is always free. It's currently under renovation, so we didn't get to see the whole collection. We still enjoyed it very much. The modern art collection primarily features Matisse, but there's a great contemporary collection that includes an entire room of large-format, late-career Warhols. The entire collection provides a careful slice through most of the history of Eurpoean painting, including some of the more influential American artists.

The sculpture gardens are great for young and old alike. The cafe Gertrude's is exceptional. Get a reservation or sit at the bar. We had a fine time sitting at the bar. The food, advice, and service were all excellent.
