Owner description: The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art-including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.* The museum is currently undergoing an unprecedented $28 million renovation to provide visitors with a more welcoming environment and more imaginative and inspiring encounters with art. The BMA is remaining open throughout the multi-year project so that visitors can enjoy its outstanding selection of European and American painting and sculpture from the 17th through 20th centuries and the newly reinstalled Contemporary Wing with 14 galleries showcasing the art of our time. Two beautifully landscaped gardens display an array of 20th-century sculpture that is an oasis in the city. The museum's 100th anniversary will be celebrated in November 2014 with the reopening of the grand historic entrance designed by John Russell Pope and a beautiful new presentation of the museum's distinguished collection of American art. Subsequent reopenings include expanded galleries for the African and Asian art collections and a new learning and creativity center that will open in 2015. Since 2006, the BMA has eliminated general admission fees so that everyone can enjoy the power of art. * Many of the BMA's works by Matisse are part of a special exhibition traveling to museums in Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and San Antonio in 2013 and 2014. If you are visiting to see a specific artwork, please call the BMA Box Office to make sure it will be on view.

Especially liked the range of the European collection including medieval pieces as well as a good representation of 19/20th century French paintings. Several Matisse. Highlight is the amazing collection of mosaics from Antioch arranged around the courtyard. Parts of museum are closed for renovation, but definitely worth a visit.

We took Mom to see the Matisse that we had seen last fall. There were fewer of them on display but there were many other contemporaries in the COne Collection. The contemporary art gallery was all over the place with some very young interesting artists, a wallpaper street artist, some video art from a collective in India and three spectacular maarble of granite rings from Thomas Moore. Domn't miss this place and don't forget to drop a twenty or two into the donation basket. These folks, Thank you Jesus, do not charge admission so that anybody can come and it needs support so that it may stay that way. Art is the heritage of all of our ch8ildren and all of them should have unlimited access. Keep it up BMA!

This museum could certainly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any from NYC or Phila. and come out looking good. Avery impressive permanent collection along with the unbelievable Cone Sisters collection. The building has an energy all its own and helps bring the art to life within its walls. All of this and free to the public! What a gem this museum is.

We only had a few hours to spend at the museum (which is free by the way!), and the docent directed us to the outstanding Cone Collection. Fortunately, it was adjacent to the fabulous Weber exhibit which is also a must see. Still, we wish we had another hour to take int the full permanent collection.

This museum has stories of Matisse and paintings by Matisse like no other. The museum is free, has a great gift shop and a very, very nice place for lunch. The whole modern art collection is very much worth seeing. Closed TWO days per week!
