It was instructive to learn more about the War of 1812 and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. There is a short video, and at the end, the Star Spangled Banner is played and sung. I had to hold back emotional tears as the screen lifted, and we saw the flag flying over the fort. Just visiting to hear Francis Scott Key's song reverberate at this place, is worth the trip. Park Rangers offer talks, and we went on one that centered on the Civil War. We learned about the fort's significance in various times of American history. Though the day was a scorcher, there was a breeze from the bay and the visitor's center is air- conditioned. We were very glad that we took a detour to visit. Since the fort is under the auspices of the National Park Service, a senior interagency pass is accepted, and one can enter without a fee. Otherwise, the cost is $7 per adult..
