Owner description: Historic fort that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the U.S. national anthem.

It was instructive to learn more about the War of 1812 and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. There is a short video, and at the end, the Star Spangled Banner is played and sung. I had to hold back emotional tears as the screen lifted, and we saw the flag flying over the fort. Just visiting to hear Francis Scott Key's song reverberate at this place, is worth the trip. Park Rangers offer talks, and we went on one that centered on the Civil War. We learned about the fort's significance in various times of American history. Though the day was a scorcher, there was a breeze from the bay and the visitor's center is air- conditioned. We were very glad that we took a detour to visit. Since the fort is under the auspices of the National Park Service, a senior interagency pass is accepted, and one can enter without a fee. Otherwise, the cost is $7 per adult..

This is a place I remember learning about as a kid in school - the fort where Francis Scott Key saw 'Old Glory' still flying high after hours of British bombardment during the war of 1812. The park rangers were all very knowledable and helpful in discussing the forts history. It was fun to wandre through at our own pace and see what we wanted to. There were numerous displays to help you learn about the fort and colonial times. This was kind of a last second stop on our vacation but ended up being one of our most enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Fun to learn about a seemingly forgotten war in the US. Learning about how the troops held off the superior English forces was remarkable.

If you are driving to the fort, get the directions from the nps.gov website. GPS will get you lost once you get off the highway.
We were there on a 100 degree day...too hot for the kids to do the junior ranger thing. We have done that in other parks...definitely worth it under normal circumstances. Start with the movie in the visitor's center first...it's actually moving as well as informative. There are some interesting exhibits in the visitor's center and then you can walk out to the fort and see the cannons and a replica of the star spangled bannder that enspired our anthem.
There were lots of rangers around during our visit, which was great because the kids had questions which the rangers were happy to answer.

If you don't have a car its quite a boat trip to get there but well worth it. And the trip is actually fun, too!
