We go to the National Aquarium any time we come to Baltimore. It is a very nice exhibit with plenty of good photo opportunities. Admission, however, is rather expensive at $30 per person without any additional shows like the 4D movie or dolphin show. If you're on vacation, splurge. You won't be sorry you went.

The National Aquarium in Inner Harbor, MD is extremely well organized, has an abundance of interesting activities and attractions, and maintains a top notch education program. Although I rated it a 5 star experience, I would have preferred more information on periodic shark feedings (which of course cannot occur on a set schedule due to the dietary and behavioral habits of sharks). There is no substitute for observing fish and marine mammals interacting as they would in their native habitats.

The Aquarium is easy to get to in the Historic Harbor area. The building is impressive and from the queueing systems outside you can tell it must get very busy. We went at a quiet time but there were still plenty of kids and adults crowding in front of us on some exhibits; we got to see everything though. There is really good variety here from open water, to coastal, rivers and rainforests, all full of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and even a few mammals like sloths. monkeys and flying foxes. There are some malevolent looking fish lurking in some of the fresh and seawater tanks and the sharks are quite impressive too.

The Australian exhibit is well worth a look but the jelly fish section lacked variety. A new tank is currently being built which may liven the central area up quite a lot. The rainforest on top is fun and I enjoyed looking at the Baltimore skyline through tropical branches. The staff were informative on the day though strangely unengaging.

We had a couple of concerns about animal welfare, especially the indoor tank with puffins in it. I was also quite surprised to see an indoor dolphin show. This is better than your average aquarium but having seen the Monterrey Aquarium and California Academy of Sciences not so long ago it didn't have the wow factor you get from seeing something for the first time. I saw plenty of unfamiliar species but I didn't feel like I learned much in general. Some sections felt very enclosed and there seemed to be several reading exhibits with no live animals to go with them. Well worth a visit though; just try and get a quiet time like us.

We started taking our daughter there shortly after they opened when she was little and have continued going every few years since. On our last trip, a couple years ago, we took my 88 year old Father-in-law in a wheel chair. He had a ball seeing all the sea critters.
