“Worth a visit if you have the time”

Fort Laramie National Historic Site
Certificate of Excellence

Since it was so important in U.S. history with Native Americans, it's worth a visit. The visitors' center does a nice job of explaining its role and the staff/volunteers in costume help tell the story of daily life for the soldiers. Some building have been restored but others haven't.

If you're in this area, Fort Laramie may well be worth your time. Some of the buildings are well preserved, with good displays showing life in the 1800's. Remaining ruins are also described; even some photos that show how the area used to look. The fort's place in history is explained. We enjoyed walking around the area and thought it worth the stop.

If you are a history bluff, you will love this place. It is "living history" done well. Besides the military significance, Fort Laramie history ties in with the Orgeon Trail and Pony Express.

Fort Laramie was a central point in the expansion of the American West, particularly as a stop along the Oregon Trail. This facility has been well preserved/restored, and the exhibits give a good feel for what it was like in its heyday.

The rangers and other staff give a great lecture on its history, appropriately encompassing both the good and the bad in relations between Americans and Natives. They were friendly and able to answer most any question.

I ran across the old radio show "Fort Laramie" years ago and became a fan. Little did I know that the show's writers took actual events from the fort and dramatized them for their broadcasts. If a trip here is on the agenda PLEASE search the Internet and a listen to a few shows before your visit you will have an experience like very few will ever have.
