Owner description: The McDonald Observatory Visitors Center staff appreciate all of the positive reviews (and even some of the negative ones, too!) that well-meaning and well-intentioned visitors have left over the years. However, we feel that TripAdvisor does not provide anywhere close to the level of management tools needed to combat the misinformation that routinely is provided by, again, well-intentioned visitors to others visiting its pages. With no way other than the "management response" feature to cull and corral the sometimes wildly misleading information posted on these pages, we feel that using TripAdvisor for anything beyond getting the general feel of the establishment is pointless.

I took my five and ten year old kids last summer and they had a blast! Staff did a great job of making tours and presentations interesting for all ages.

Boy do these people know there stuff. The astronomers that host the star parties are so enthusiastic that you can't help but want to keep looking at the stars when you come home. Do both parts of the party as they are both fun and informative and very good value. The night skies are truly stunning and you will get to see lots of planets and stars through the telescopes. The cafe does a good coffee and cookie as well.

Every Tuesday and Friday night, when the sun goes down, there is a "party" out in the open air with a guided tour of the sky and telescopes galore. We saw Saturn (with rings), the moon, a distant galaxy, star clusters, and more. A highlight of my entire trip. Don't pass it up.

Our star party occurred on an evening after a very windy, dusty day. It limited the visibility of some stars but the guide made up for it with everything else we Could see. He was very knowledgeable, had a great sense of humor, and had a marvelous laser pointer that worked most effectively. We did not have to wait long to look through each telescope despite the large group. Each 'scope was fixed on a different planet or star. We definitely enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

We found every tour, exhibit, and program here even better than our already high expectations. If you do a night program that is outdoors, be sure to dress very warmly.
