Wear good shoes and bring water. For anyone interested in history this is a place to visit. It is $3.00 to get in plan on staying about 2 hours. The tour starts in the visitor center with a short movie, then on to the Enlisted men's barracks. The barrack is set up like it was when the fort was built in the 1880's. Most of the fort is in ruins but some of it has been restored, like the enlisted barrack, commissary, part of the hospital and a couple of houses. While you are experiencing history the bugles sound at designated times, reenacting what the soldiers heard back when the west was wild. Fort Davis was on the San Antonio-El Paso road. A 600 mile road people traveled going from the east to the west. Fe infants of this road are still present at the fort. In the enlisted barracks a docent answered questions and he was dressed in attire that a so,diner would have worn at that time.

In the early days of our nation, men in Washington had a vision of manifest destiny. It was easy to redraw the map but difficult to expand westward. Fort Davis is a well-preserved testament to that. It was built as a fort to protect travelers going between San Antonio and El Paso. Additionally, it played a vital role in African-American history as it hosted buffalo soldiers. There is great hiking available in the Davis Mountains that surround the park. You can actually take a hike through breathtaking scenery into near by Davis Mountain State Park where you have the option to camp or stay in an old hotel built during the depression. Fort Davis is truly a must see!

I've visited several times over the past 30 years, and it's always worth the visit. This is the best example of a Western frontier fort in the U.S. today. Kudos to the staff and the NPS for continually maintaining and improving this site.

This national historic site is a very real depiction of the U.S. Calvary in the 1860's and the Buffalo soldiers that primarily manned the fort.

I have been to the Fort Davis National Historic Site several times and I am always entertained, educated, and enchanted. The location is so lovely. The ancient cottonwood trees with horses grazing under them, the gorgeous rock formations and the beautiful buildings with their fascinating history provide a journey back in time that should not be missed when in the area. I love to hear the recordings of the different assemblies and calls and I especially love to hear the sweet, mournful sound of "Taps" floating out over the quiet evening. This historic site provides a most enjoyable glimpse into the past.
