Comfortable and spacious rooms set in a cool adobe building created by the CCC, this place is worth the drive and a long stay. Ft. Davis is nothing to write home about, but for those who love history and the outdoors, the Indial Lodge makes the town bearable. Sure, the sheets and towels aren't plush, and they have lined the ceiling with bamboo (hmmm?) and not native wood, but everything works (except the fireplaces in every room, sadly). The on-site restaurant is staffed by friendly, efficient folks and the food is just fine (probably as good as anything else you'll get in Ft. Davis). Ample walking areas are just outside the door -- and the McDonald Observatory is just 30 minutes away. Wonderful!

We stayed there for one night after our visit to the Observatory which was excellent with a very good guide. As we live at sea level, we were feeling woosy from the effects of the high altitude so when we came down we wanted somewhere to stay quickly. Our guide recommended the Lodge so we went for it. We were welcomed by the Rangers and given a room that we could park next to. Very pleasant, comfy and clean, which one would expect at the price. The restaurant in the next building was good value for dinner and breakfast. The sunset was beautiful and next morning, after breakfast, we enjoyed the drive around the reservation and the view from the top.
We had no time for hiking etc, but many other people were thoroughly enjoying themselves out in the countryside. |So if you want to be in a quiet place and in mountains and scenery - go there!!

Our stay at the Lodge worked out great, but only because the Ranger who checked us in felt sorry for us. When we made our reservation, we were told if we got there early we could choose our rooms so that we could be in the old section and have 2 rooms next to each other - DO NOT believe the person taking the reservation that tells you this - it isn't true. One of the rooms was switched by this wonderful person and we were on the 1st floor of the new section facing east (specifically, we had rooms 314 & 315) - the views were awesome! We didn't have any problem with noise from the folks above us. The AC unit was broken but they had brought in a portable AC unit so there was good white noise. The beds were comfortable enough.
We ate at the Black Bear for breakfast - adequate, but nothing to write home about.
Be sure to tour the old Ft. Davis - it is very interesting and well done.
Indian Lodge is a very relaxing place. My only suggestion/complaint is that they have a great firepit but they don't use it. We really wanted to sit around a campfire.

Yes, it is a very serene atmosphere and very cool. The sunrises are excellent displays, the hiking and birding are great, too. Also, skip the observatory and just observe the stars from the parking lot on the east side of the lodge...awesome view of God's heavens!

Now, to the rest of the story...the mattresses need replacing...very uncomfortable. Outside, is peace and quiet; inside is noisy sleeping because of noises in the a/c unit and occupants in other rooms. The Black Bear Restaurant needs a new cook or two...gone down in quality of food since a year ago. So, with some better insulation and better cooks and better mattresses, it would be really ideal.

We will probably return because it beats anything else in Ft. Davis, but we'll bring along our memory foam mattress pads and perhaps a small fan to keep the other noises muffled. We will eat elsewhere.

We loved the tranquility of the setting in the Fort Davis State Park. The Lodge was comfortable, clean and the old furnishings and decor were charming. We will always stay in the older part and try for a first floor room with no room above due to being able to hear every step of the early risers above us. The many outdoor sitting areas provided a great place for relaxing, playing games and watching fireflies. Can't wait to get our family together there.

One of our planned stops on a road trip.Excellent location with beautiful views.Clean rooms.Nice comfy beds.Southwestern decor. Pool looked nice but it was too cold to swim..Everything I expected. Restaurant was good but took quite a while to get our food. Great hotel in a wonderful setting. Would love to return one day.

We stayed here while traveling all through west Texas...wish we'd just gone straight here and stayed the whole time. It's so relaxing. No, it's not your normal chain hotel...but hey, it's not you normal chain hotel! It's so much better. We plan to go back as soon as possible.
