Description: We're a worker-owned cooperative whose mission is to serve delicious, organic food; foster joyful work; and build up our community. Every ingredient used in our foods, breads, pastry, chocolate, and coffee is sourced specifically for quality, wholesomeness, and sustainability. We foster kinship among workers, our regulars, and with our community by donating our excess to the tables of those in need; supporting our local schools, farmers, and nonprofit organizations; and offering cultural and educational events to bring people together throughout the year. Workers earn an average of $13.50 per hour, paid leave that is accrued after three months of employment, scheduling that is worker-focused and flexible, dental benefits, one staff meal and drink per five hour shift with a 30 minute paid lunch break, a 25 percent discount, a fresh loaf of bread per week, and access to wholesale ordering. The kin work involved in consensus-based decision making and management requires a commitment to communication and trust-building within the work community. What does this look like? Proactively seeking feedback before and after shifts, working – not only efficiently, but – mindfully, being a reliable person, reciprocating good will, giving direct feedback early and often, listening to seek understanding – especially in conflict, and avoiding victim mentality by being both vulnerable and accountable.

I've lived in Astoria for thirty-some years, and the Blue Scorcher is one of the best things that's ever happened here. You know the food you're eating is wholesome and good for you, you know you're not going to come away from lunch suffering from being overstuffed with fat, corn-syrup-laden crap from Sysco and Costco, and you feel great about supporting a real, local business that's doing everything to keep this community alive. The baked goods are exceptional, up there with Ken's Artisan Bakery in Portland, and all ingredients are organic and sourced as locally as possible. The Blue Scorcher is a collective, which means the workers get paid the same as the owners. Very interesting.

I take people to breakfast lunch here all the time. Every once in a while, the quality wavers and occasionally the service is slow, but hey! it's a collective. On the whole, this is a fabulous place, a true experiment in community.

Spacious, funky coffee shop and cafe. Magazine racks (for sale) with huge assortment of random publications. Excellent coffee. Food very good too. Very friendly and informal service. Kids' play area (a little grubby) and book selection next to couches. Lots of locals coming and going. Great spot for lunch or coffee anytime. Can hang out here quite a while and enjoy yourself.

After a great workout at the Astoria gym and lunch next door at Fort George Brewery, we stopped by Blue Scorcher for dessert. I had the lemon cake which was very yummy. The inside of the cafe is very casual, we sat at the rail where you have a peek of the Columbia River. We also got a piece of the flourless chocolate cake which was rich and decadant. This is a great place to relax with a cup of coffee and blend with the Astoria locals.
