“Cannery Pier Hotel”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Our stay at The Cannery Pier Hotel was fabulous. Every room has an amazing view of the river and a small balcony. The rooms are very large and very nicely furnished and include a fireplace. They are almost like suites rather than just a room. The bathrooms are huge with a soaking tub and shower and a window through the room itself to the river view. The hotel also provides a "heavy" continental breakfast, as well as a complimentary wine and lox in the afternoon. We enjoyed being driven to town in the hotel's beautifully restored old Studebaker. I would definitely recommend and return to this hotel.

4th stop on our San Francisco to Seattle road trip. Yet again thank you Trip Advisor. We had a good feel about this hotel as we approached Astoria and were not disappointed. What a wonderful setting the pier jutting out into the Columbia river. As we walked into the hotel it was spectacular; light, airy and with amazing architecture and design. The staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our 2 night stay (we wish we could stay longer). Our room was on the third floor and was excellent, with a fireplace, a wonderful bathroom with claw feet - and it is true you can sit in the bath and watch the ships go past!! The balcony opened up our room to the most incredible views of the river and was a pleasant place to relax. The hotel had vintage cars for which you could reserve a time slot for getting into town for dinner which was an added feature and great fun. There was a drinks and smoked salmon reception each evening which was very sociable. Breakfast was a continental buffet in the lobby area which was very relaxed, the pastries are highly recommended. There is no restaurant but a wide choice is available in Astoria itself and the reception staff most helpful with their recommendations. We had an excellent dinner at the Bridgewater Bistro, a very short walk across the waterfront and ate at the Silver Salmon Grill on the Monday evening. Walking along the waterfront into town from the hotel was most enjoyable and also gave good views of this remarkable hotel. A visit to Captain Flavel's house is both interesting and informative. We can thoroughly recommend the Cannery Pier Hotel and Astoria.

Good sized room with unobstructed views of the river (even from the bath and shower). The fireplace would be lovely in cooler weather. Make sure you book a ride in the old-timey car; worth it alone for the comedy show put on by the driver and his "assistant". Very fun - even if the ride is less than ten minutes. Pleasant common areas with more views. Salmon snacks and wine, as well as a breakfast buffet, add to the experience. But don't stay in your room, be sure to get out and explore!

Room Tip: Seems that all rooms are designed to have a good view of the river.

The location sitting out Into, the Columbia river estuary is fabulous and the rooms with their balconies make best use of it. The bedrooms are spacious and very comfortable and all the plumbing is excellent. Watching the ships go close by your window is superb. The staff are very helpful without being intrusive. The free wine and canapés are most welcome and breakfast is comprehensive and very tasty.

Flew into Portland and spent the night here before going down the coast. Got a nice-sized room with a sitting area and private balcony. Staff gave us glasses of wine even though their happy hour was over. Very nice breakfast and great staff - oh, and the sea lion that swam by the balcony says "hi"!

The Cannery Pier is the most expensive hotel in Astoria, and the views make it worth it. They work hard at providing upscale extras which also help justify the cost. We stayed in a suite: king bed in bedroom, and a small living room. The view cannot be seen from the bed in this arrangement.

PROS:

On top of the water. Corner rooms have windows on two sides, which does a lot to open up the view.

Balcony with each room.

Wine, cheese, crackers, lox canapes (5-6pm).

Breakfast: waffle maker, cereal, fruit salad, yogurt, pastries.

Very pleasant staff.

Binoculars, fridge and microwave in room.

Bikes for borrowing.

Vintage car will drop-off to and/or pick-up from local restaurants.

Downtown within walking distance.

Nice spa on site.

Plates of cookies in evening.

Jetted tub in bathroom.

Second sink in living area, (but the faucet is too short, making hand washing tricky).

Two bathrobes in room. (I have 36" waist, and robe was at its limit for closing.)

CONS:

Upon entry into our room, missing paint patches immediately visible. In our room, and in hallways, touch-up paint is not well-matched and thus looks shoddy.

Chairs in lobby area have flattened cushions that add little comfort.

Balcony is too narrow for chairs.

Fold-out couch in our room felt like sitting on a fold-out couch.

Bedspread and decorator pillows on bed, and a cloth headboard: it's time to do away with these non-washable decor items.

TV remote not designed to be wiped clean.

No slippers. At this price, slippers would have been expected, and a nice touch.

Room Tip: Our corner suite had wrap-around view in living room, but no view visible from bed.

Fancy would certainly describe this former cannery gone upscale hotel. A wine tasting was happening in the lobby as we checked in. The woman doing so was overly welcoming, and like most hotels the check in process was a bit longer than I cared for, but she explained everything about the hotel and without it I probably wouldn't have been aware that the vintage Cadillac parked out front was available to give us a ride into Astoria (a bit of a haul to walk, but there is a dedicated path and on a bike it would be no problem).

Our room was spectacular. The bath tub has a hole cut in the wall which allows you to look out, through your "living room / bedroom", for a view of the Columbia River and the various ships passing by. A small balcony opened the view up even further. Definitely recommend!
