We come every year and are never tired of walking to the column from downtown and then up it. The views are beautiful. You do have to be able to walk the stairs. The design on the outside is cool too though. Parking is $1.

“Good experience”

Before we go we heard of the spiral stairs but it turned out not so bad. We had good time on the top especially my son. He loves to see the airplane fly around.

“Are we at the top yet?!?”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

Completed in 1926, it's an impressive column that gives the viewer a visual history of Lewis & Clark. It boasts great views from the top once you've climbed all 164 steps! Inside the column are narrow, girded steel steps that wind up to the top deck. On a clear day you can see all the valley - including the Cascade Range & Columbia River, bridges, and a sweeping view of Astoria. Good history lesson for the family! Make sure to bring your camera!!

The kids loved flying wooden airplanes from the top of the column after climbing to the top. Amazing views.

“Worth the stairs!”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

Although I am quite afraid of heights and don't enjoy these types of stairs, I am so glad that I did it. The view from the top of the column is incredible. I actually felt quite safe on the viewing platform and took photos of almost the full 360 degrees. The view offered me a quick geography lesson and I had an immediate appreciation for the explorers and first nations who traveled this terrain. The 125 ft column itself and the artistic depictions are quite inspiring. I can appreciate what a complicated task it must have been to erect it with the tools available in 1926.
Please visit the historical society volunteers in the gift shop and donate $1 for parking.
