“History Teachers would like this...”

A great learning experience about the Huguenots and their tragic fate in Florida. Also, a great walking trail is in the park, as well as a boat dock.

“History lesson”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

We like to take the boat to Ft. Caroline and tie up at the dock. You can walk right up to the fort and follow the signs to the park headquarters where you will see an exhibit of the Timucuan Indians and the French who built the fort. If you drive there, just follow the easy to read signs. Bring insect repellent. Lots of mosquitoes. At the exhibit, you can discover how the Timucuan Indians dealt with mosquitoes and other pests(like the French).

“A regular stop with visitors.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

The museum is quite modest in size but tells the story of the settlement of the area and the feud between the French (there first) and the Spanish quite well. Sadly, it also very clearly depicts the demise of the Timucuan people after the arrival of the Europeans, largely from diseases previously unknown. The reproduction of the fort is interesting, especially for children, There are also reproductions of Timucuan dwellings, and several trails to walk.

“Wooden Fort”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

This French wooden fort differs from the rest of the Jacksonville area forts because it was not made of bricks. It was in fact recreated in a interpretive fashion because the original one was destroyed and then burnt down by the both Spanish and the French. The fort structure is small and because it was recreated, there is not much to see. Note, there were no buildings within the fort walls. But it is worth a visit because the national park itself is beautiful with numerous hiking trails and breath-taking views of the Inter-coastal River.
