Fort Caroline is part of the National Park Service and we visited so that my daughter could get another stamp for her NPS passport. The visitor's center at Ft. Caroline is very nice with lots of displays, a very knowledgeable volunteer and a NPS intern. We picked up the Jr. Ranger brochure and headed down the very short and well maintained trail to the fort. The trail was easy enough for my 4-year old, myself, my husband and my 67-year old dad.
The fort itself isn't much but the river is fun to look at and there are several side trails that you can take to make your hike longer. We visited in November and didn't experience any bugs (as previous reviewers commented on) but I can imagine that they would be pretty bad during warmer weather.
