While looking for something to do on a Saturday morning I came across this place which was listed on Jacksonville's Event webpage. The park itself is not very large but I was pleasantly surprised with the local history. The volunteers were nice and the displays in the visitor center, though small and quaint, were very nice. I especially enjoyed speaking with Larry T. who walked me through the history of the Maple Leaf, a Union vessel destroyed by a Confederate torpedo in April of 1864. It was truly wonderful to see the artifacts displayed so that all could enjoy the history - on piece at a time. I also took a walk through the grounds and around the boardwalk. Very nice.
